Ok, I want to know the movies that you cant believe got such a low or high score here on metacritic and the score that you would give them, understand? Good! Ill start:
Should've been lower:
1) Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow:
It got a 65 but I would have given it a 40.
2) Lost in Translation:
hmmm...Well there was really nothing bad about it, but nothing about it was really that great either. The acting was good, but the movie didnt deserve an 88. Id say more like a 60.
Should've been higher:
1) The Last Samurai
It only got a 53. I think it deserved something more like a 75.
2) Gladiator
Such a great movie. Winner of quite a few oscars including Best Pic, only got a 65. Deserved an 80.
3) The Forgotten:
I cant believe this got a 38! I mean, it wasnt great, but it certainly wasnt bad. I wouldve given it a 63.
4) Enemy at the Gates:
This is a really good little gem and certainly should have done better than 53. Id say like at least a 70.

1.) "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" has a totally undeserving metascore of 98 putting it higher than the classic "Schindlers List" with a 94
I'd give CTHD an 89
2.) "Hulk" witha 55!? Egad! Though the movie wasnt perfect it still merited a positive metascore!
"Hulk"--65
3.) "Kung Pow: Enter the Fist" wasnt all bad and it was overall stupidly funny. To have a 13 and be 28 on the bottom 200 worst films of all time is not quite right.
How about a 30-40
4.) "Baby Geniuses" gained an overall score of 6. Oh, I shalt not argue with its awfulness----Im just dissapointed that films cant merit NEGATIVE metascores!
Godfather- A very good movie, not PERFECT, as a hundred would suggest and in my opinion not THE best movie ever made. More of a 92 to me
Spider-Man 2- I didnt think this deserved an 80, it was good, but not that good. Maybe I think this just because im not that large of a fan of spider-man More of a 65 to me
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabam- I'm also not that big of a fan on the harry potters, but I didnt say how this one was that much better than the others, getting an 80. More of a 60 to me.
Movies that should've gotten higher
Terminal- I liked this movie. I like tom hanks and think the movie doesnt deserve a 53. I would give it more of a 70
The Village- Not that good of a movie, I admit. But deserved more than a 40. I would give it more like a 55.

oh, hell yes. 70 would be a well-deserved upgrade, but this may have been the kind of movie more popular with discerning masses than uppity critics. sometimes critics suffer fatigue and shift into automatic when they're put through a re-make of a re-make they fear will be all too painfully predictable. thats understandable.

I do not understand how one can simply make up an arbritrary number for a metascore. It, by definition, doesn't work. See http://www.metacritic.com/about/scoring.shtml for an explanation. It is not what they feel the work should have scored. It is a weighted average of many scores. You can't change another person's review. One person's review only accounts for a part of the metascore.

If the movie is at all shaky or mixed reviews, different interpretations, etc, of course its going to get lower than it probably should. Movies like Lost in Translation score so great because it was easily an agreeably good movies. These sort of movies with no controversial reviews get high ratings. Half Baked, however, had high enough characters to make up for the low ratings. The humor was sort of a "low brow stoner hilarious". Its not going to be interpreted well on a website that takes average scores while the overwhelming majority of critics are tight-ass geeks. ( I guess I'd fall under that category myself ...)
I don't know if the Metacritic score should be higher/lower yet, but I find it hard to believe that BORAT is going to be a better film than THE DEPARTED. I realizing I am picking at nits here, but BORAT gets a 90 and THE DEPARTED 85. I haven't seen BORAT, but will but don't expect it to be in the class of the Scorsese flick. In fact, only THE QUEEN, which deserves its 91 rating, has topped BORAT'S score for '06 releases. I remain skeptical that BORAT will be in THE QUEEN'S league.

Borat is unbelievable, but it is difficult to compare to other movies. I guess it depends on what you mean when you speak about "classes" and leagues." I really see Borat as more of a documentary, which is why it might be difficult to compare to fictional stories. In addition, I think it may be difficult for some to compare it against other "serious" dramas because it is so overtly comedic. That said, the undercurrent of the film is a serious social comentary on American life and culture, and I'm not sure it gets more serious than that.

You know, I read all the positive reviews saying the same thing: that Borat was a biting social commentary. And then I watched it, and it really amounted to nothing more than poop jokes.
