Here's the year end best-of movies from my local free weekly, The Riverfront Times> I have a love/hate with the RFT, which is great sometimes, but bad more often.

Here's their year-end top ten:

1. Sideways
2. Maria Full of Grace
3. House of Flying Daggers
4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
5. Bad Education
6. Napoleon Dynamite
7. Osama
8. Fahrenheit 9/11
9. Metallica: Some Kind of Monster
10. Closer

I think that it is bad this time PE. I mean, it looks like they just picked the most sophisticated movies possible and just put them in. What is it with all of these list having so many low-budget films on them? I don't get it, I guess this is a new sort of "Indie" creating for the movie scene. "Hey everybody, if you have a camera and a couple friends, you can make one of the best movies of the year!!!" I don't mean that literally but you get what I mean, many of the listed films, basically picked a number of unknown actors/actresses, ("Maria full of Grace" and "Bad Education" for starters) which I am not against but this "Indie" thing is gettting out of hand.

I like putting Fahrenheit 9/11 on the list, but Metallica's movie gets number nine, Napoleon Dynamite gets on the list as well, give me a break.

I've only seen ESOTSM from this list, although I want to see Napoleon Dynamite and a few others, but it strikes me as a fairly typical critics list...focus on the low-key indie flicks, disregard almost anything "Hollywood" and attempt to "save the cinema." It's really no different than indie music critics dissing anything that comes out on a major label simply because of the label.

HOWEVER...given my inability to find many movies this year I really liked (ESOTSM is the only one that will probably weather repeated viewings) and the fact that I've not seen many of the films on this list, I'll reserve judgment.

These all seem to be abstract movies. None are really hollywood blockbusters or anything of that sort. As I said elsewhere, Sideways was not that good. I dont know what the whole fuss about it is anyways. I really like Napolean Dynamite but wouldn't rate it as high as they did. I heard Maria Full of Grace was excellent. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind should've caught a higher spot. F 9/11 seems to be a little high. Osama was very good, but not my type of movie so I would've probably rated it loser. I havent heard many good things about Metallica..... But I still want to see Closer and really want to see House of Flying Daggers.

I saw Napoleon Dynamite last night and enjoyed it a whole lot. I probably would put it in my Top Ten of 2004, but that's at least in part because I can't find a whole lot of other movies that really blew me away this year.
