I have two foreign film guides, Holt & Faber, and I find both lacking. Both tend to list only big-name international directors and films that have received commercial distribution in the U.S.

Does a good foreign film guide, more comprehensive than Holt & Faber, exist? Is there an equivalent of, say, Maltin for French films?

That might be an interesting opportunity to publish film guides for different countries, such as France, Italy, Germany, Britain, et al and model it after Maltin?

Is there a good guide for French films translated into English or even one in France. If there is I've never seen one/don't know of one.

Not a book-guide on movies, but a fine quarterly journal on foreign films, featuring interviews with many of the prodigious European film directors.
Attempt to read CinemaScope. Any reader will highly enjoy it. The magazine is filled with much information on truly independent movie scenes, and it is very well written.
Just previously they had an issue on Canadian cinema. It is accessible online.
