"Angeles" is a perfect example of the lack of care that he takes with his guitar playing. Like I said before- his tone is horrible. I know, I know who cares about "tone,"it's "superficial," but the sound that he gets from the guitar is like nails on a chalkboard for me and is enough evidence to cause me to question his abilities. It sounds to me like he plays with the skin on his fingertips, rather than his nails. I hear that tone often- from my beginner guitar students. I will concede that he was a good songwriter and that he wrote interesting guitar parts that served his songs well, but his abilities as a guitarist were limited and that is enough for me to object to his inclusion in this discussion.
Gotta like the dickriders who re-enter a thread JUST to to piggyback in with anyone they perceive as an ally against someone they can't handle themselves.
Playdough, it seems odd to me that you just happen to be a guitar instructor after I mention that I'm one. But I'm going to take you at your word - PLEASE tell me you are not harassing your young students about "tone." There isn't a less essential aspect of playing that I can immediately bring to mind. Give a great player a half-broken twenty year old bottom-of-the-line Yamaha and they can make beautiful music. No tube amp or expensive pickup can make an inferior player sound better than a superior one. That is BULLSHIT sold to you by people who sell to guitar nerds in various magazines and catalogs. But none of that matters here anyway, because the tone in "Angeles" is beautiful . The notion that because it sounds a bit glassy or "round" or any other bullshit adjective tone monkeys could come up with (we should ask John Mayer, he loves saying stupid shit about tone) he's not taken enough "care" with his playing is ridiculous. It's a terrific sound for the song. I'm sure it's just like he wanted it to sound, and it serves the melody and the playing perfectly.
Also - not all of us are pretentious enough to make our right hands look like Kevin from Sin City in order to be able to play Kathy's Song a little more clearly. That's why any of you prospective students shouldn't skip taking lessons for fear of being stuck in a booth with a guy who has claws and a ponytail.
This whole thing is digressive and insular.
I didn't really think about Ira - he's quite a guy.

Fail.
Actually, I'm simply not interested in a battle of the wits between us because I'm afraid you may have been dealt a short hand. It's more amusing for me to throw cheap shots at you than to have to read your inane attempts at intelligible posts. But you can ride my dick any time you wish, if that's what you're asking.
As per the topic, I see no Andy Bird mentions which isn't surprising but he is a more than competent finger-picker and his songwriting ability is bar none.

When you talk about the equipment you're missing my point: I'm talking about the way that Elliot Smith plays, not the guitar, amps, or microphones that he uses. And yes I do get on my students about tone. If they're playing with what I consider to be a poor tone I will explain to them that maybe they need to change the angle of their right hand or maybe their nails are not quite right. I don't tell them to go out and buy a new guitar! That's not going to help at all! In fact, when I'm demonstrating a better tone I will actually use the student's guitar, just so they can hear that the difference is in the playing, not the instrument. They always agree that it sounds better when I play it despite the fact that I'm playing the same notes with the same tempo and phrasing. The tone that is created by the musician is an important aspect of musicianship, whether you're playing guitar, piano, violin, flugelhorn, or whatever. Once I attended a Pinchas Zuckerman masterclass and all he talked about for the whole hour was tone tone tone. I will agree that tone is not as important as some other aspects of musicianship, but that doesn't mean that it's not important.
Alright great, you like tone, which seems to be a word you're applying more to what I'd call a combination of things like vibrato and expression. We should be done talking shop now.
I like Richard Thompson, LK.
Mike, you can't even spell competent. Most of the active threads in this section lately have been made by me, and I'm taking this opportunity to invite you not to participate. You consistently say stupid things and that's not really what we're into.

With regards to the typo, I implore you to read up on neuromuscular facilitation. In reference to the remainder of your comment I invite you to suck my balls or maybe put down the dictionary long enough to understand that the length of your post does not have any correllation towards the effectiveness of your argument. As for you speaking for the whole, it seems rather redundant as you already seem to be speaking out of another hole.
To stay on topic, where's the love for Jonny Greenwood? J Mascis? Johnny Marr?

It's correlation WITH, not correlation TOWARDS, you stupid, stupid fuck.
"competant" is not a typo. You spelled the word wrong, because you thought it was spelled that way, because you are stupid. Could you be any more duplicitous, cowardly and just wrong about everything you say? Probably not, but I'm guessing you're gonna take a few more shots at it.
Other items:
-People have already mentioned all of those guitarists -That's not how you spell facilitation either -Or correlation -You are digging the hole deeper each time you post. Shut up.

I don't imagine Mike double checks everything he posts for grammar or spelling. It's a message board. You're making yourself seem like a prick who spends far too much time trying to make everyone around you seem dumber and less important than you.
Are people this easily confused? He came into a thread I made and took what he HIMSELF said was a "cheap shot" at me, and when I dress him down I'm a "prick." I'm so sick of people.

I'll give you that. I love you, though. My posts are all in good fun. Cheers.

Im a guitarist by trade and it always amuses me when I see those "greatest guitarists of all time" lists in magazines etc. What bullshit. As far as i'm concerned, to be considered a great guitarist (in the "indie" sense at least) you need to meet the following criteria...
1)You need to be playing in a great band with great songs
2)You need to strike a good balance between good technique and tastefully playing whats right for the song
3)Having a distinctive/unique style of playing always helps
4)Tone
Anyho , the first guy that springs to mind is Johnny Marr. In a great band , technically brilliant without overwelming a song , and ofcourse meets all the other criteria....
Another chap that is always criminally overlooked is Bernard Butler . He played on a band called Suede's first 2 albums. Possibly even better than Marr , but thats just my opinion....
In how many different and specific ways did I just demonstrate your stupidity to anyone who can read?
This is a guy who has obviously spent a large amount of time in teh flamewarz (losing). He has all the main techniques down.
1. Remain in denial about yourself at all times. 2. Ignore occasions when you are made to look like a moron. Tell yourself/others that you have just "pwned" the person you argued against. 3. Remain in denial about yourself at all times. 4. Do the equivalent of nudging and snickering to anyone who seems even remotely sympathetic, tell yourself they are your friend and "have your back." 5. (denial)
You are done here. You're so done it's hard to even express how done you really, really are. And I'm done too. Honestly, go away.

If I was simply a troll, I would have left long ago. I'm under the impression that many believe you are the troll, I don't care either way as long as we are both enjoying what we are doing on this forum, it shouldn't bother either or us.
