If I mentioned those to most of my friends, they may have heard of 1, maybe 2, and only because I'd probably mentioned it once or somehow forced them to listen to it. So I'd still call Sub Pop indie. Until The Shins make it on to mainstream radio, I'll continue to do so.

(And LCD Soundsystem isn't a Sub Pop release...?)

Anyway, my top 10 indie records of the '00s, in no order:
The Wrens - The Meadowlands
The White Stripes - Elephant
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
Liars - Drum's Not Dead
The Forms - Icarus
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Death From Above 1979 - You're A Woman, I'm A Machine
Arcade Fire - Funeral
The Rapture - Echoes

Yeah. Maybe he meant Boys and Girls in America.

Not that anyone's going to read this far:

In no particular order (after the top 3, at least) - and yes, I'm aware that my definition of 'indie' is a little (a lot) flexible. Of course, my mind will probably change the moment I hit Post Now:

1. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
2. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
3. The Decemberists - Castaways & Cutouts
4. The Postal Service - Give Up
5. Ben Folds - Rocking the Suburbs
6. Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
7. Hayden - Skyscraper National Park
8. The New Pornographers - Electric Version
9. A.C. Newman - The Slow Wonder
10. The Decemberists - Her Majesty, The Decemberists

My number 8 slot was a tough pick, as I think Electric Version and Twin Cinema are nearly neck-and-neck perfect. So I basically went with the one that has been able to stand up to constant listening for longer. Number 10 was even harder, as I'm of the opinion that Picaresque, Her Majesty, and The Crane Wife are all equally wonderful albums. "Red Right Ankle" is what won it for Her Majesty, though, as it may very well be one of the five most beautiful love songs ever written.

I pretty much love every album on your list (well, I don't love Yoshimi, but I do love the Lips), but I've never heard of Hayden. What are they (he? she?) like?

Hayden is the stage name of Paul Hayden Desser. It's just one guy, and you can't be blamed for not having heard of him, as he's a fairly obscure Canadian indie export (dating back to the mid-90s). Although he's gotten a bit peppier and poppier recently, the majority of his stuff is fairly lo-fi, earnest, acoustic singer-songwriter stuff (I've heard it described somewhere as 'ambient grunge' and always liked the description, although it doesn't reflect Skyscraper National Park very much at all).

Long story short, Hayden was supposed to be the next Neil Young. There was a bidding war, a major label release with a (very) minor alt-rock hit ("Bad As They Seem"), and then he was dropped from the label and fell back into obscurity. Skyscraper National Park is his third album, and in my opinion, his absolute best. The problem is that he's on his own Canadian record label, so his stuff is pretty difficult to find outside of Canada (he has a distro deal, but it's not a great one, so releases tend to be delayed and availability is often spotty). For what it's worth, he's gone downhill a bit since Skyscraper... but he's still worth checking out, and will always be one of my favourite artists.

I wrote reviews for a couple of his albums back when I regularly wrote. Don't laugh, because yes I know that they're awful:
Hayden - Everything I Long For
Hayden - Skyscraper National Park

Thanks, sounds like it would be right up my alley! I'll be on the lookout.

I think the Flaming Lips is a perfect example of how hard it is to define "Indie Rock". To me they clearly make music that isn't making it on any fucking ClearChannel playlists (anyone notice my vitriolic passion), but they're on Warner Bros. Records, clearly not an indie label.

I'm not jealous. I'll be watching scary movies with my mom! Hah!

Man, I feel so lame...

...probation end, NOW!

EDIT: I don't mind too much, my mom is awesome. My dad is way more cool though.
