As you can see, 2005 was quite a year. I'm also thinking about 2000 and why I can't pick a notable album from that year.

Aaaaand... it's because there are none.

The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age, Yo La Tengo, Modest Mouse and The New Pornographers were still considered "indie" back then. Their albums from 2000 are worty albums if you ask me.

1. Radiohead - Kid A
2. Sufjan Stevens - Come On Feel The Illinoise
3. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
4. Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
5. The Strokes - Is This It?
6. The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free
7. The Arcade Fire - Funeral
8. Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
9. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
10. Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News

I couldn't have ignored Radiohead, that album basically introduced me to the so-called genre. The Streets is an album I'm surprised to not see much on these lists.

Personally, I have no idea what your talking about, but more to the point, this matter has already been discussed. Everyone has a different perception of indie. The trick is to not force your ideas on others.

That's one of the interesting things about this thread: we get to find out a little more about people's definition of "Indie". No point in getting into a discussion about it here, though. One look at someone's list and you probably know how they feel about the subject. -goathouse (I'm not sure how to pull quotes yet)

And for your information all 10 of my choices have appeared on other lists so it's not as though I'm really off the mark with these. I suppose if you wanted to you could create an indie-fundamentalist forum if this isn't really doing it for you.

Yes, this one has been overlooked a little. I think you'll find it's little brother Original Pirate Material appearing more often. Why? Not sure, really.

Big Grin

That was great, it reminded me of this: So You Wanna Fake Being An Indie Rock Expert?

I just felt like you completely ignored the indie part of the equation. I mean, the Strokes? Really? Franz Ferdinand? Yeah, that's some hardcore indie right there. Yeah, everyone has their own definition, but you can't just say that all music you like is indie without completely destroying all meaning of the word indie.

I agree with you in spirit. In practice, however, it would be hard to not include some of these - whatever your definition of indie. I'd probably put all Shins' albums on my list, and I know they ceased being indie years ago. But, what else would you call them? Pop/Rock? It just doesn't sound right.

Last I heard, the Shins were still on Sub Pop and 97% of the western world still hasn't seen Garden State-- yes, they are indeed "indie."

They're still on Sub Pop, sure, but I'm pretty sure that the Garden State phenomenon made them about as mainstream as Interpol, Modest Mouse, and other crossovers like that. Everybody I know has at least HEARD of Garden State, even if they haven't seen it.

Sub Pop may not be considered a major label, but it's got major talent (or "talent"). This year alone new releases from:

The Shins
Blitzen Trapper
Iron and Wine
The Postal Service
LCD Soundsystem
The Go! Team
Wolf Parade
Low

edit: I won't believe that Postal Service rumor until I hold a copy of the albums in my own grubby hands.
