I'm surprised these two aren't on more lists.

Btw, Hollister's jukebox has killed Silent Alarm for me (one of it's songs comes on every 10 minutes... yes, I work at Hollister haha)

They get a lot of comparisons to the Flaming Lips, although that's not too accurate. The singer sounds kinda like Gordon Gano. Really restless songs that take off in odd directions. Melodically a bit similar to, say, the New Pornographers. Definitely pop, lots of unusual instrumentation and silly sounds. Very fun.

I purposely did not read the rest of the posts in this thread because I did not want to be influenced by them. I've been thinking about this for a couple of days and this is what I came up with:

In Chronological Order -

White Stripes, De Stijl (2000)
Spoon, Girls Can Tell (2001)
Drive-By Truckers, Southern Rock Opera (2001)
Okkervil River, Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See (2002)
Interpol, Turn On the Bright Lights (2002)
Crooked Fingers, Red Devil Dawn (2003)
Iron & Wine, Our Endless Numbered Days (2004)
Antony & the Johnsons, I Am a Bird Now (2005)
José González, Veneer (2006)

I would start with their first album - "the Dreams that Stuff is Made of" or something like that. They get the Flaming Lips comparisons partially cos both bands are from Norman OK. I can kinda see the NP connection, but the Starlight Mints are way weirder - still with the poppy core, but lots of odd twists and turns in the songs, and some of it (I'm talking mainly the first album here) is surprisingly dissonant, in a catchy way.

I haven't given Drowaton a full listen yet, but their achilles heel in the first two albums is that they can't seem to come up with enough really solid material for a full length at a time (I recommend the first album cos I think it suffers less from this than BOS).

Built On Squares
, their sophomore album, is unstoppable for the first 5 songs or so, but it sags like a mother in the home stretch (tracks 7-9 or so). Still, I would definitely give a hearty recommendation for 'em.

Shoot. I meant to mention I was leaving the 10th spot open for this year. Right now, I certainly see Dino Jr sliding in there nicely, but I'm not ready to commit.

Interesting that so many Spoon fans like Girls Can Tell best. I have that one and Gimme Fiction and I far prefer the latter. How does Kill the Moonlight compare?

You can search both the known, and unknown universe, and not find anything like Kill The Moonlight.

I don't think that there is any other 'genre' that would be able to throw up as many amazing artists as 'Indie' does...there must be about 40-50 albums on this thread that I've never even heard of.

Nothing like the combined thoughts of many to deflate one's belief in his musical knowledge!

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
The Walkmen - Bows and Arrows
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
The Arcade Fire - Funeral
The Black Keys - Rubber Factory
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake...
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
My Morning Jacket - Z

To me these seem obvious (if not a little dubious as to whether these are 'indie'). I would also put Interpol's 'Turn on the Bright Lights' and Death Cab's 'Transatlanticism' in as favourable mentions...

Series of Sneaks>Girls Can Tell>Gimme Fiction>Kill the Moonlight>Telephono

I haven't quite made up my mind about Ga^5, but I think it slip in just behind Girls Can Tell at #3.
