Which are all really the same guy. But that detracts from the mythos I think. I made a really silly decision the other day that I'd delete all my music and I'd just listen to Jandek for a while, to get fresh new perspective on things, since he's basically his own genre. But as I kind of figured, the idea(s) of Jandek are more impressive than he himself actually is and the music isn't as out of touch as I wanted it to be. "Cave In On You" off the first one (originally ascribed to a band called "The Units" for some reason, despite obviously being one man) is still one of the most unsettling things I've ever heard, and I hear particularly about a few other songs/albums in that vein, like his A Capella twenty-something minute death prayers. I think really I liked the idea of everyone seeing how much Jandek I listened to and smiling, but damn it that's too hard a charade to keep up.

He's really fucking indie though, like he makes Daniel Johnston look like Michael Jackson. He only releases these super lo-fi albums out of I'm imagining his living space and only started making appearances recently, like thirty years after he started releasing music. And he lives in Houston somewhere so I may try to track him down some time if I'm ever out by him anyway. I will say I like him when I can actually pay attention to him, which is seldom, it's like this really deconstructed old blues or folk, like from the 30's. No posturing, just really direct stream of consciousness with this atonal, very unconventionally tuned and played death rattle guitar. You could probably cobble together a pretty good compilation, but it would require listening to a bunch of his 50+ self-released albums and that's probably not as worth it as I thought even a couple of days ago. But I'd recommend him for anyone who considers themselves adventurous.
