Thoughts? I like it a lot. It seems to me to be a hybrid of Frog Eyes and original Sunset Rubdown.

i haven't heard it yet (anyone have the link?), but i saw them play this summer and their new new songs were some of their best. most of them reminded me of the more upbeat/rocking songs on shut up i'm dreaming.

I think it's really good, kinda hard for me to wrap my head around at first.. but it's got some serious strong points.

I was obsessed with Sunset Rubdown/ Frog Eyes/ Swan Lake for about 3 weeks. Then one day the novelty wore off and I was holy sh^t this music is strange.

In the words of Randy Jackson, "I'm sorry dawg, but I just wasn't feelin' it."

I do look forward to the new Wolf Parade album, though.

Maybe it needs more time to grow on me, but I can't get into it. I loved the first Sunset Rubdown record and I'm a big fan of Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes, and Swan Lake too. Something about Random Spirit Lover is a little too carnivalesque at first though. I reserve judgment before I give it a few more spins.

What's odd is I've never been a Sunset Rubdown fan.. I couldn't get into them at all. I like Random Spirit Lover a lot though.

It's all about that climax on "Colt Stands Up, Grows Horns"... quite likely my favorite track.

Thank you SO MUCH Jglass. I'm on my third listen and am at a loss for words. I love their first album, really like his wolf parade stuff, and love his swan lake stuff. While no track so far stands out as better than Stadiums and Shrines II or Us Ones In Between, the album is far superior. Best album of the year so far. It's blowing my mind.

P.S. Jonathanbrisby, let it grow on you. Most great albums DO have to grow on you. It's rare I hear a "great" album and love it the first time around.

I'm extremely aware of the "needs to grow on me" phase an album can go through when you first listen to it. The new Sunset Rubdown left me with a huge hurdle to get over though, it has several aspects that seem carnivalesque to me. I cannot stress enough how much I fucking hate carnivals, the circus, clowns, etc. No matter my love for Spencer Krug, he has placed a massive hurdle in front of me to get over in order to get into the new Sunset Rubdown. Only time will tell I guess.

I know what you mean about the carnivalesque sounds. It bothered me the first time I heard Upon your Leopard, but after that it didn't, and I didn't notice it in the rest of the album as much. Oh well. Maybe you shouldn't have watched Stephen King's "It" as a child. I avoided it but know many a people who now hate clowns. Although the clown doll on the Are You Afraid of the Dark? intro freaked me out. This has nothing to do with Sunset Rubdown. My bad.

On first impression, this album didn't really interest me at all. After a couple more listens, I like it a little more, but I still think it's a weak album. I'll keep persevering(sp?) with it though.

I was scarred by clowns ever since I saw Scary Movie 2 where the gay black man raped a clown doll.

God, that movie was shitty.

I'm starting to like song #6.

Wow, this album is just so diverse. "The Mending of the Gown" starts off with a cool guitar solo and runs into alternating Paul Simon Graceland chords before devolving into a glorious sonic rampage, while "Colt Stands Up, Grows Horns" has a synth line that sounds like the darker cousin of the synth from "The Final Countdown"! This album keeps surprising me every time I listen.

That song is my favorite off the album, I love how it builds up to the climax at the end.. it's perfect.

This is probably going to take the top spot on my Best of 2007 list.

I like this album. My only criticism, and some of you have suggested this is a strength, is that it lacks some cohesion - sort of the same complaint I had for Bjork's Volta (although I still digg it). I think I need to give RSL some more TLC before I make up my mind.

Holy freakin' jeeze, this is incredible. I've heard most of the album at hypem and i have to say it is really blowing me away. Each time I hear these songs they just sound even better than the time before.

The Mending of the Gown is the best album opener of the year. It really sets the tone and kind of sounds like the first song to some awesome musical. When he sings the chourus it is simply magical. I also really like "The Taming of the Hands...," Definitely the catchiest sunset rubdown song i've heard.

This going to very big for Krug too. I think it will certify him as one of the best songwriters around. He really should up there with sufjan
