Marc Jacobs Runway

Does anyone know who the band playing is, and what song they're playing? I only ask in the indie forum because I know that most runway music is indie. It's for my girlfriend. Shut up. Haha.

Are you serious? That's Sonic Youth...

Notice Kim Gordon? She sings "Kool Thing". It says "Sonic Youth" on their drum set...

No. That's just what they want you to think. It can't be that simple.

The first song is Jams Run Free, right?

Haha. I never looked at the drum set and I've never really listened to any of Sonic Youth's stuff. Besides Daydream Nation.
Thanks. I'm blind.

No problem. This should go in the "alternative" or "punk" section though.

Just kidding.

It should actually go in the "Can't you spot Sonic Youth from a mile away?" forum actually.

Just kidding. I didn't get to listen to this ("Kool Thing" apparently), but they were playing at a runway? Like... Modeling? Starbucks Compilation? Are the beloved Sonic Youth selling out a wee bit in their old age?

I wouldn't call it selling out. When I first let my girlfriend listen to some of the music I listen to, she said it sounded like the sort of stuff they play at fashion shows.

To me, selling out is exchanging your sound for an image and what's "cool right now". Sonic Youth has done what they wanted with their music for as long as I can remember.

Sonic Youth can do whatever the hell they want.

Especially considering making a living as a musician is a lot different these days than it was when they began. Also, while I'm torn about the Starbucks thing, a runway show is a little bit different. Fashion is an art form, just like music.

True, plus Kim Gordon is huge into the fashion world. Apparently, in the Nineties she had her own clothing line with some other woman whose name I can't recall. And fittingly, a Japanese clothing company bought it.

Isn't the whole "selling out" thing over? Can't people just release whatever they want to release in whatever form? Advertise their music however they feel they need to?

The days are long gone where the majority of artists can survive on simply album and concert sales.

No. You must release it on a label no bigger than Sub-Pop, for as little a profit as possible and not allow any of your music to be played on any medium except the internet and concert venues that don't also double as sports arenas. Any airplay on radio, television, fashion shows or Starbucks is strictly forbidden.

You've been clearing up a lot of issues for me today, Eric. I appreciate it. Wink

X-Girl, which was an offshoot/response to the Beastie Boys' X-Large. I think it was with Yuka from Cibo Matto, wasn't it? Something like that.

I'd say you're spot-on but I can't find it online and I'm too lazy to look through _Confusion Is Next_

Eric's a heatseeking missle scoping out all the idiots who can't take a joke. This is awesome, his little comment just might troll a little internet user into the ground.
