i recently got this cd and have been playing it nonstop. im going to baltimore to see them tomorrow and was wondering if any of you guys have caught them live and can tell me what there shows are like
I like Akron/Family. I thought their s/t CD showed a whole lot of potential, but it also seemed like their style hadn't quite congealed effectively yet.
But..if you hear their songs the Akron/Family - Angels of Light split LP, their music is really coming along, and I think their next album will be fantastic.

I've been listening to this album a lot lately. It took a few spins for it to sink in, but the vast majority of the songs are good. It has a very cohesive, "album" feel to it, too, in that you can tell there was a lot of thought put in to how it would be sequenced.

I really like The Akron/Family's self-titled record on Young God, but after seeing them live I will probably not buy another record without hearing it first. When I saw them in January they had quite a few bits that sounded like jam band material in the Phish sort of style. I was appalled.
I don't know, I feel the same way about these guys as I do about Broken Social Scene; the whole album pretty much seems like a mess to me. There's not nearly enough good melodies or hooks to pull me in, and I don't really feel like it has a very good atmospheric feel to it either. I'm kinda baffled by their popularity, to be honest.

I haven't heard their self titled but I thought their half of the Angels of Light split that came out last year was definately in the top five as far as recorded material. Tremendous.

I feel exactly the same as you do. All right, I haven't listened to the album too much, but the first impression is that of a very messy record.
