And a very high-opinion of us they seem to have

"The Glow gets a lot of beef for taking its sweet time on things, but if any record merited taking a normal amount of time to digest -- and a few weeks is a normal and correct amount of time, Metacritic boarders -- it's In Rainbows. We were, in other words, too busy fucking to review this record. No apologies forthcoming."

I read that more as the writer being a prick than them necessarily having a low opinion of our little forum. There were a few of us bitching about how slow they were writing reviews about a year ago. And really, we only bitched because we liked their webpage and were sad to see it slipping. This guy got a little defensive, but CMG was struggling. Reviews were weeks after release dates, the site wasn't updated for weeks at a time. Anyways, the good thing is that they got their issues worked out. I agree with RL that I don't agree with them as much as I used to, but I still check their page out every couple of days and enjoy reading their reviews.

You know the saddest part is that I haven't even been able to listen to this album yet. I can't bring myself to buy an EMusic subscription just to get this album, even if I'm going to just cancel after my free 50 songs, or whatever. Ordering takes so long coming to Alaska, and when I get packages in the mail the week before christmas and all they have is a CD I bought for myself my wife gives me 'the look'...

hehehe... ah yes.. that look.

I hear you.... I was pretty hesitant on the eMusic thing but it's actually saved me a tonne of money. You still have to buy some CD's from somewhere else becasue eMusic doesn't carry them (Fleet Foxes, TVOR) but overall its been good. Been a user now for 3 years and I'm getting 90 downloads a month for $230/year. That's $20 bucks a month for 90 downloads. That's insane!

(... end of sales pitch)

So...I am not familiar with a single one of Last.fm's "Similar Artists" to the RAA.

They are: Virginiana Miller, Fake P, Artemoltobuf, Gioacchino Turu, N.A.N.O., Entire Cities and Peter Broderick.

Can anyone vouch for any of these recommendations?

I will vouch for Peter Broderick, though I don't think his music is very similar at all to the RAA's. The reason those are both on there is probably because there are a number of Metacritic people who are into both artists.

Entire Cities are from the same city (I think) and are pretty good. I know some people who really like Entire Cities, including one guy who has it #1 on his year-end list. I don't think it's nearly as good as the RAA, but I like it well enough. There are some broad similarities, but I wouldn't really say they have a similar sound.

Haven't heard of the others at all. My guess is that they are from the same locale as the RAA and have little else in common, but I could be wrong.

Quick question to anyone who ordered the CD off their website: how long did it take you to receive it? Did you receive any kind of notification that it had been sent or did it just show up at your door?

This is my first transaction with Paypal and I'm kinda uneasy over the lack of oversight on the purchase. Makes me feel like I'm risking my money for a product I may or may not receive.

You'll get it. If you are really concerned, just email them. I did and Nils confirmed that it would be shipped. Nice guy too.

I think the email address is on their website under 'Contact'.

I've ordered tons of stuff through PayPal, including this one, and it's always worked perfectly.

My copy took exactly 8 days to arrive. The Paypal notification is what I received. Never had any problems with Paypal and I prefer using them for net purchases.

That would mean tomorrow for me! Although DC is pretty far from Toronto. (I was about to say "from Alberta" lol)

Hey, EP. I'm dying to know if you received your disc and what you think of it.

Still hasn't come in. Frowner I sent an email to them today to confirm that it was shipped, haven't gotten a response yet. I'm really dying to hear this album too. It's probably the last release of the year that could really shake up my top 20.

I hope that after all of this anticipation, it's not a big letdown when you finally get it. I hope you're not expecting a life-altering, mind blowing listen - just a damn good indie rock album.

Oh, definitely not. I just know that it sounds really good from the few songs I heard on their myspace.

And Paul replied to me this morning and said that it had been shipped from their end but they would graciously offer to send another one. Go RAA!

theelfpat, the only one of those bands I'm familiar with is Entire Cities. They'd fit pretty nicely next to RAA on a mix CD, put it that way.

Having listened to quite a bit of the band, I remain unimpressed, but this story of helping the act along is a terrific example of people power.

Well done all who cared enough.

I was in my local record store today and I overheard someone asking the clerk if they had any copies of Hometowns today. They didn't, but then later I asked him about it and he said that they had just ordered a bunch directly from the band. I then preceded to tell him that it was an awesome, awesome album.

Just another fun story I thought I'd share.

Whoa, that's awesome. Getting your album in stores is a major sign you've made it. Thanks for that tidbit, Cosmos.
