You wouldn't.

Whoa, you're right! I just did an identical Google search and we're the third result on the second page.

This is cool- The RAA was in the top 10 on Lastfm's "hype chart" for the week ending November 30th, which measure the greatest amount of increased plays for artists.
They had a 272% increase for that week.

Hometowns is also the third most downloaded album on eMusic for the last month, passing up Microcastle.

That's pretty wicked - all that has to happen now is for Pitchfork to give them their blessing...

One of you should email them. I did several years ago for them to cover something and they promptly emailed me back saying they already were planning a review and to look for it shortly.

Although I bet they get thousands of requests for them to listen to unsigned bands.

Slap a "they sound like Neutral Milk Hotel" sentence in there and we'd have it.

I am tempted to fill this post with a bunch of porn keywords and start a false rumor about a new Jeff Mangum album, but I will resist.

Did you say Porn and a New JEFF MANGUM ALBUM!?

Just doing my part to help out.

You know the saddest part is that I haven't even been able to listen to this album yet. I can't bring myself to buy an EMusic subscription just to get this album, even if I'm going to just cancel after my free 50 songs, or whatever. Ordering takes so long coming to Alaska, and when I get packages in the mail the week before christmas and all they have is a CD I bought for myself my wife gives me 'the look'...

On Thursday evening, I sent the following e-mail to The RAA through their website:

quote:
I thought you might be interested in reading this message board thread from metacritic.com which discusses how The RAA was recommended to eMusic:

http://forums.metacritic.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/576108/m/8460060185

A great number of people who regularly post on Metacritic are very excited for you, and we hope that your selection to eMusic Selects leads to bigger and better things for the band. As some of the posts on this thread state, we think of The RAA as our band and are thrilled that we played a role in getting you where you are today.

Best wishes.

This morning, I received the following e-mail back from the band:

quote:
Hey Troy,

This is amazing! The eMusic thing has really been incredible. We never would have expected something like this to happen! Thank you guys for writing such nice things about our record and telling so many people about it- it has obviously done a lot for us! If any of you guys are ever in a town we're playing, please let us know your screen name (and real name) and we'll do everything we can to put you on our guest list.

Thank you again,
--AMY (and Nils and Paul too)

I don't think they'll be in Los Angeles anytime soon, but I hope that all you Canucks take advantage of this kind offer.

Now that I know they're reading this, I feel bad I said their album was just okay.

If it's any consolation, Amy is pretty hot.

Yeah, in a part of the e-mail that I did not reprint, Amy said that everybody but that Eric guy is invited to their shows. Wink

Update:

eMusic is counting down it's top 88 albums of the year as chosen by the editors. Hometowns is #29.

Too low for my tastes, but still a good showing for the band.

I gave this several listens sitting at a desk listening through iTunes on desktop speakers and it was nice enough, but honestly I couldn't understand all the love. Then a couple days ago I listened in the car while driving and it clicked. For me, this album definitely works best as a blast through the stereo, sing along type experience. I'm now thoroughly enjoying it, although the only song I'm turned off by is the "grandfather in the ground" one. That one is a little too obnoxious for me. The rest is damn good.

Oh, and to do my part to help with the Google search results...

Brittney Spears, Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Sex Tape...

I like this idea. Like it or not, P4k has a lot of clout in the indie world.

I've already e-mailed the Devil's website and asked them to review the album. I received a nice auto-response that says that someone will get back in touch with me because they do take these e-mails seriously. If several other people also e-mail about Hometowns, perhaps we can get them to take notice.

You may want to try cokemachineglow as well. First, they read these boards, at least some of them do as we've seen them reply to threads related to their website. I've even read them reference these forums in one of their reviews. I think it was for In Rainbows if I remember right. Anyways, seems like they enjoy bringing more lesser known bands to the masses. Also, they're Canadian so thats gotta help. A good review from them would really do a lot I'd guess.

Yeah, while Cokemachineglow has grown a bit more avant-garde than I generally prefer over the years, you've got to give them props for giveing very good obscure bands and artists their due. It was because of them that I discovered that Grand Salvo album, Death, earlier this year.
