The RAA was named 2009's Hottest Band in Canada in a fifth annual poll of Canadian music bloggers. It's a pretty impressive list, with Sunset Rubdown all the way down at #18, Great Lake Swimmers at #14, Think About Life at #13, Metric at #9, Bruce Peninsula at #8, Japandroids at #4, Handsome Furs at #3, and Fucked UP at #2.

Whoa, that's awesome! Glad to hear the RAA juggernaut is yet to slow.

I find it insteresting that Handsome Furs is so much higher than Sunset Rubdown. This is a pretty impressive list to top. It is also an interesting glimpse into what must be floating around over there. ---------------------------- There's an ember in the rafters and it's gonna burn this whole thing down.

That's an interesting list through-and-through. It's cool to see Dan Mangan at #12, as his album Nice, Nice, Very Nice is in my top 5 for the year. Some of the others I've yet to hear but want to check out on that list are Gentlemen Reg, the Wooden Sky, Ohbijou, and Andrew Vincent.

I came here to post a link to that very list, but it seems you beat me to it, Troy! It's a pretty decent list in general (even though I'm not super familiar with several of the bands on there), but I agree that it's weird that they put Sunset Rubdown so much higher than the Handsome Furs. Also RL, I think I recall you being a fan of Elliott Brood, so I think you'll probably like the Wooden Sky; I saw them both on a short tour they did together about a month ago and they were both very solid live bands, especially Elliott Brood. Go see them if you get the chance - they put on a fun, high energy show.

Seriously, WTF? It's a torrid punch in the gut that a band like The RAA are #1 in this list. But come on, above Sunset Rubdown and by that much, there is no way man. I know some people (a few brilliant minds imo) have gotten their heads cut off for saying anything anti-the RAA on here but this doesnt make sense. Many points to hash out but SR's 2009 album is head-over-heels so much better than the RAA one. It's ambitious and extensive and one that will hold the test of time by the time decade lists are finalized. Krug is a master at spinning these crazy words into compelling stories while the RAA guy is a straight-up flop. No way, no way that the RAA are better than SR. Even if it is hottest bands in Canada (whatever the hell that means) and not something like best band from Canada, no way RAA should ever be above SR, ever.

Very weird that Sunset Rubdown is that low, but nice to see a lot of great Canadian acts get recognition. I would implore everyone to check out the number 27 band on the list, Olenka and the Autumn Lovers. I think they have Warsaw Girl available for download so check it out.

I haven't cut off any heads, but there are a few people with a few less fingers. Seriously, I don't think that anybody has been too uncivil to someone who didn't like the RAA. I think most people think "To each his own." But, I do agree that Sunset Rubdown is waaaaaay too love. It's in my top 5 for the year, and my favorite Canadian release this year (I count the RAA as last year).

Yeah seriously, way too low. I am not sure about 'uncivil' but it seems like some kind of unwritten rule for anyone who is a member here and looking at the list LK posted of that other site's list that the RAA are extremely loved here. Both members that are still here and the ones that have left love this band. This is cool for them, I suppose, to like such bland music but come on, #1 on any list, no way. Maybe you all should change the name of this thread to just the RAA or something because the title breathes an air of slant that is too illogical. Not to mention entirely confusing.

So do you. But seriously, I understand what you are saying. The band has a sort of small town hero appeal around this place that kindof flavors our bias towards them. But that doesn't mean that they aren't still a good band, and Hometowns is still objectively one of the best albums released last year (this year it would fall a little lower in the pack perhaps). No one on this board actually voted on this poll. They are obviously loved by other music devoties beyond these walls. All in all, don't get too bent out of shape about it. The list was compliled by bloggers. They will classically give more recognition to something being "Hot" if it's new. Wolf Parade would have topped this list in 2005, no questions asked. It's been a few years. Krug has consistently been pumping out great music all along, but I think people have started to just take that for granted. It doesn't surprise anyone anymore. Those are just my thoughts. Also, Alpacalips, I like FragileKidA as much as the next guy, but your apparent worship of him is bordering on grotesque. ---------------------------- There's an ember in the rafters and it's gonna burn this whole thing down.

I propose "A Logical Treatise: Mathematical Analysis of the Rural Alberta Advantage, Utilizing Spherical Trigonometry and Fourier Transform Analysis of the Audio Frequencies and Psychoacoustics of Hometowns"

Hype will certainly make a band appear to be much better than they actually are. And that is the problem I notice with a band that extremely decent and not that great. No doubt that Sunset Rubdown is a way better band with creatively interesting music that grips and never lets go. Glad to see someone else appreciate FKidA as much as I do! quote: Originally posted by RavingLunatic: I propose "A Logical Treatise: Mathematical Analysis of the Rural Alberta Advantage, Utilizing Spherical Trigonometry and Fourier Transform Analysis of the Audio Frequencies and Psychoacoustics of Hometowns"
Lol, good one! I propose something like The RAA: Are they even good? but I'd settle for something less biased, hell even something unheard of like The RAA - Hometowns, maybe?

I was actually Googling an entirely different band (Freelance Whales for the record) when I stumbled across a couple RAA features on a Toronto blog called Ca Va Cool. Pretty good stuff, especially that interview. http://www.cavacool.com/spotli...l-alberta-advantage/http://www.cavacool.com/featur...l-alberta-advantage/Also, I don't know if anyone here lives near Toronto, but there's a contest on the same blog where you can try to win a couple tickets to an RAA concert in Toronto as well as a copy of the album.
