Is it just me, or have we been seeing a lot more unsigned bands making big noise on these boards lately. Here's a list of unsigned bands I've discovered through you guys here at MC:
The Antlers The Rural Alberta Advantage Parlovr Cymbals Eat Guitars Apollo Ghosts
Can anybody think of any more?
Why is it that all of a sudden we've got a shitload of unsigned bands making waves on these boards?
Isn't this a great time in music where a band, without the support of a label, can record an album, stream tracks on their myspace page, sell CDs through their websites, but them up for digital download on eMusic, and get a following before they even enter into negotiations with labels?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Canasta. They released their first album in 2006, and it made a few waves, but they haven't gotten the success that they deserve when the music is so good. Canasta!
"And in conversations about which Breakfast Club character you'd be, I'd be the one that dies." "No one dies..." "Well then what's the point?"
Maybe I'm a bit too self-promoting. Maybe I have an agenda.
But, I can think of worse things than wanting to get little known bands I like some exposure. And, sometimes it takes a little more than a quick post in the Best of . . . forum to do the trick. At least my posts are generally positive and not insulting.
Or, I can try your tactic: mention an album once, then wait until the end of the year lists to bitch about how Metacritters are too narrow minded and never take your recommendations seriously.

What are you, 13 years old? Because in my experience, only little school boys think that it is okay to use the word "gay" as an insult. I could care less, but it is demeaning to gay people.

He runs his own label, so he puts all his records on the label, so he's not "unsigned", but I thought I may as well throw him out there.
His last record, Plays is a glitch/clicks/"electronic" album composed completely of acoustic instruments. The rule was there was no plugging in, or computers allowed, and it sounds really good.
The guy is a genius, and he's got a couple of other bands he's in, such as Winning, which is kinda like early-Deerhoof. A.D.D. art-rock.

There are several unsigned artists I like. One of them is my favorite artist period, and that's Elephant Micah. It's a little difficult to categorize his music, but lo-fi Americana comes closest. He's made many of his out-of-print albums available for free download on his website, where you can also make a voluntary donation for the free music. I've made several donations. Anyways, here's the link to his website., and here's a link to one of his albums available for download on his website:
Elephant Micah and the Agrarian Malaise: This is probably the best starting point for anyone wanting to try Elephant Micah's music. It's got what is maybe his best electric-guitar rock song in "Malaysia" and numerous amazing other songs. Just an incredible album.
And here are a couple other songs you can either download or stream, the first a rock song and the second an acoustic one that's more lo-fi than most of his stuff:
