And if Bono could write lyrics half as disheartening as "Fake Plastic Trees," or as emotionally reserved and simultaneously devastating as "Black Star". It's fine to not like them, but to call them overrated seems a bit absurd.
Oh, yeah, U2 aren't as mopey and sulky as Radiohead. I don't have a big problem with Radiohead per se, but here's a list where they get the number 1 and 2 spot of greatest albums of all time: http://www.listsofbests.com/list/13644 In this context, I don't think it's absurd for me to call them overrated.

Well I wouldn't take that list seriously anyway. Two albums by Oasis in the top ten? Thats ridiculous. Not to mention that Ray of Light by Madonna is ahead of both Exile on Main Street and Blonde on Blonde.

SY, Spoon and Radiohead all deserve the hype. Along with the Beatles, Sex Pistols, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, NMH, the Pixies, Pavement, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, etc.
They were/are all really fucking good at what they do/did!!!
Yeah, but not nearly as good as Led Zeppelin. And that's a scientific fact!
I think Radiohead is seen as overated because they are such an easy band to talk about.
That's for sure. Take any great band or legendary band and someone will argue about them because he personnaly dont like the band's music. I could say that X band is overrated and all, but it doesn't makes interesting topics....hey what am i doing here!?! RADIOHEAD ROCKS im out
I've finally become curious enough to take a gander at some of the new stuff that's been floating around (live performances of Videotape, that reel with bits and pieces of their new songs) and I'm starting to get actually excited about the new album. Dear Radiohead, please sign with another label and put out that album ASAP...

Or just release yourself... Radiohead is HUGE
Seriously, they could start their own label if they wanted. Anything to get that sweet sweet Radiohead into my hands sooner.

Well Radiohead is not my favorite band but I would not describe them as overrated. I think we can all agree that they are maybe the most mainstream "indie" type band, but thats not their fault. Ok computer is a good album and one of those that gets better with time. I think their latest "in Rainbows" is maybe their best album to date. I think you have to look at it from a contextual perspective. Like many have mentioned when you first heard ok computer was there anything like it ? NO. Same for most of their albums. Sure there are many Radiohead knockoffs now, but does anything else sound like "in Rainbows"? I dont think so. Thats what makes them a great band. Someone earlier referenced Q magazine top 100 albums of all time. That is not a good argument for Radiohead being overrated. First, that is not a list of the the top 100 indie albums. In that case Radiohead might be way down the list, possibly a better reflection of them as a band. Also, there are artists like Michael Jackson, Led Zepplin, etc on that list? PLEASE!!!
Originally posted by just indie: ok, so ive read threads where u guys call sonic youth and spoon, two bands i love, overrated. im gonna start a thread on a band i think is HUGELY overrated. ive listened to kid a. and ok computer. and all there albums, except pablo honey. i just dont get the appeal. i mean im not calling them a piece of rap, but a great band? no way. feel free to tell me why you disagree, maybe im just missing something.
i respect everyones opinion on here so im not going to just castrate you as i previously wanted upon opening this thread, lol.
im assuming you didnt listen to kid a, ok computer, or any other albums of thirs until recently right? that could be your reason. before i say three-four years ago this genre was not too popular.
radiohead paved the way for many of the bands you listen to today. not to mention gave them inspiration.
not saying those albums dont have lasting appeal at all. hell i listen to kid a almost daily. but i can see with all this music now that is sprouted up sounding similar to them that maybe it sounds just "ordinary" to you?

i think at this point you can claim every band is over rated....
people talk about how a band influences mainstream and another person argues they were not so groundbreaking...
take any band say one that supposedly shaped modern music... Pixies
beach boys + early metal= Pixies
Pixies + Screaming Trees + Mud honey = Nirvana...
who cares? you don't like a band don't listen to them,
I had to spend my teenage years listening to ppl tell me how great Nirvana were (most of this based on listening to Smells like Team Spirit) , I did not get then and don't get it now...
I really dug OK Computer when it came out first it sounded like nothing I heard before, then I expanded my music library and it wasn't so unique anymore.
Kid A still holds up for me, mainly on the strength of the songs..
if you want to talk over rated... try COLD PLAY or Snow Patrol or even u2...
