Now that you mention it, it is reminiscent of this.

One of the key strengths of the album though is probably part of what is throwing people for a loop. It doesn't take itself seriously. However, it pretends to take itself seriously. There is a sortof "Spinal Tap" parody feeling to the overtopness of it all. Just listen to the "The Mending of the Gown Again" and listen for the the tounge in cheek sound of the guitar riffs and the beating piano keys.
It like a extravagant stage play, but he purposely leaves the curtain open so you can see the stage hands smoking and drinking beer backstage playing cards while the people in leotards dance in the foreground.
Krug is using what we think we know and expect from music as a weapon to attack our understanding. He's scribbling mustaches and beards on everything we had thought was real musical art. So now we can just relax and say, "Oh yeah, I remember now! It's just music!"
This is seriously challenging Boxer for my #1 spot.
I think you're probably right, Shadrach. Prior to this album, I didn't know who the hell Spencer Krug was. Yeah, I've listened to Wolf Parade and Frog Eyes a little bit, but as far as the individual members and their personalities/tendencies go, I had no clue. So I'm gathering that perhaps he's a gent that doesn't take himself all that seriously? Nevertheless, this album is amazing. I criticized some of the transitions in an earlier post (by which I meant within individual songs, not from one song to the next) but now that I've listened to it about 30 times, I pretty much love everything about it and find that it's quite possibly going to end up as my favorite album of the year.

I want to give this album some more credit. I realize that this will mean different things to different people, but the most glaring thing about the album to me is that, except for the two short songs, all the others are the kind I compare to what I call "Beatles multi-part songs". They do remind me of the creativity and diversity of "Happiness is a Warm Gun" and "You Never Give Me Your Money". Now, come to think of it, the two short songs would fit comfortably on Side 2 (vinyl) of the White Album.

It's been mentioned already on the forum, and was talked about in Pitchfork's sidebar, but Sunset Rubdown did a session at Daytrotter. They opened up with a new song called "Idiot Heart". Anyone that has any interest in the Rubdown or Random Spirit Lover needs to check out this song. Also, it might be a good experiment for anyone that felt RSL was too theatrical and carnivalesque, as "Idiot Heart" is possibly the most straight up Rock song I've heard them play. Spencer even sings for a large portion of the beginning, rather than wailing. Yeah, "Idiot Heart" is some kinda cool! I liked what they did with "Three Colors," too. So those backing Spencer Krug for Sunset Rubdown are a really freaking tight-playing group. Better than any of his other bands, I think. They music they've made over the past two years is better than anyone else right now.

some albums you can hear them n love them only in/with special conditions. "random spirit lover" is one of them. it s even better than their previous n in some parts it makes you think that no other band write music like them("Up on Your Leopard..." , "The Taming of the Hands.." sadly , i m still not in the right mood to get in their beautiful world (again). it really confuses me these days...

That session was incredible. I think RSL might have been better with the slow version of 'The Mending of the Gown', as you can actually hear the (good)lyrics.

I just barely got around to hearing the Daytrotter session and yeah, all of the songs are great, especially “Idiot Heart.” I think that I really do like Spencer Krug a lot and his music seems to really grasp me. I never liked Wolf Parade but the “Krug songs” on their album I do like a lot. I still haven’t checked out Sunset Rubdown’s first album though. I did see it on a few critics’ and users’ year-end lists though. For those of you that have heard both, is it as good as this year’s album? And even if it isn’t, is it still a really good album in its own right?

Their first album is actually Snake's Got a Leg and is a collection taken from various ep's. It's interesting to hear the rough versions of songs from Wolf Parade, but isn't very good otherwise. But Shut Up I Am Dreaming is a good album. It's not sequenced like Random Spirit Lover, not even close. Where the new one seems to focus on cohesion, last year's feels more like a collection of songs. But that's not really a bad thing. The sequencing isn't bad, but it's not Random Spirit Lover. Also, each song is good. Really good, if you ask me. Instead of focusing in composition, the hallmark of RSL, Shut Up I Am Dreaming seems to focus more on the lyrics and songwriting. Of course, the music is still interesting, but Krug's wordplay is what really stood out to mean with this album. It's not the best of last year, or anything, but it's still really good. Honestly, it's one of my favorite albums, it's just not in the same league as Random Spirit Lover. I think you should check it out.

I think it is pretty ridiculous too. Best of the year by a long shot for me.

The album is ridiculously bad with the exception of the first few songs. Sometimes it is almost unlistenable! Missteps like Stallion are unbearable. I don't understand how sane people can like such 'songs' as 'Colt...' or 'Trumpet!...'

I guess you just have to listen to them, and I suppose being insane helps.

What? I'm all about differences of opinion, but I have a hard time believeing someone that obviously listens to Animal Collective would Hate Sunset Rubdown. I'm okay with you maybe saying you don't like it and whatnot, but calling it "unlistenable"... that's just confusing. Also, how can you like "Mending of the Gown" and despise "Trumpet Trumpet.."?

I agree with strawberry, actually. I liked some of Sunset Rubdown's first album, but Random Spirit Lover was almost universally bad to my ears. I found it to be extremely annoying, honestly. And I like Animal Collective.
I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.
