If you took all the music from Sunset Rubdown, Frog Eyes, Wolf Parade, Swan Lake, and whatever other side projects these guys got their crypt-digging little fingers into, and played it simultaneously in a small enclosed space for a week straight, you'd have to void it into the nearest black hole afterward or a haunted carnival funhouse-of-mirrors would suddenly appear there and start eating teenagers.

I wanna experiment with this... it's quite possible that this would happen.

But...but, I really liked this album. Thanks for ruining it for me Frag. You know I can't like it if you do.
Damn.

So so very true. This album is a revelation. It fought me at first though.

Yeppers! I love it now. Really expansive, intricate, epic, etc. The stuff that sounds superfluous at first integrates into the whole quite well in the end. The female vocalist adds a beautiful touch. Love the maniacal keyboard-playing and the twisted theme of the whole that nonetheless doesn't bog down into sentimental drivel EVER.

Digging: "The Mending of the Gown", "Colt Stands Up", and "Stallion".

"Stallion" is pretty awesome, as is the one about the Trumpet...all the songs have such ridiculous titles it's hard to remember sometimes.

I have the same problem with the majority of the "Hissing Fauna" tracks too.

I'm really glad that people are starting to come around on this album because I absolutely love it. I said it in the Best of 07 thread and I'll say it again here - it's in my top ten of the decade. You might think to yourself, "You're just saying that because you've listened to it three times." The truth is that I've listened to it pretty much non-stop since it leaked in August and it just gets better with every listen. So many layers. The first 5 songs in particular just kick me in the face. Absolute stunner of an album. Those of you who've only listened to it a few times...give it a few more because I want to say it took me around 10-12 listen before I realized the brilliance of this thing. So....yeah.

The thing that bugs me about Spencer Krug is that there are these moments where I blink and think, "damn, that is GOOD." Unfortunately, they are 10% of his music, and I don't like the other 90% of it.

"To The Pier (and Dead Shimmering)" is a good song, though.

So Pitchfork gave it an 8.5.

Considering I was hoping for a 10.0, I'd say I'm a little dissappointed.

As good as Shut Up I Am Dreaming was, Random Spirit Lover is obviously a much better album. Except, the former got an 8.6.

What the hell? I can understand why it didn't get a 10.0 or even in the 9's (okay, I can't understand that), but Pitchfork didn't even give it a better score than their previous one!

Maybe today's scores were thrown off by the Radiohead distraction.

Random Spirit Lover is still my album of the year, far and away. Radiohead's gonna have to put out a masterpiece next week to top this one.

What doesn't make sense to me is that the review is almost 100% positive. Does the same person score the album as writes the review?

Yeah, I was confused by that also. What exactly was it that brought the score down. I haven't heard the album yet, but for me, it's the most exciting thing that's happening next week.

I feel it deserves a score in the high sixes low sevens, so maybe Pitchfork was feeling generous. Wink

Also, I can't recall the last time Pitchfork gave a 9 - was it Person Pitch or Sound of Silver? Neither of them really deserved it.
