No doubt, number one is the coolest summer party album I can recall playing throughout a certain summer: I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, followed by Painful and Electr-O-Pura. I do have a soft spot for Genius + Love (which doesn't count), and I don't think they've made a weak album, but I'm a bit distressed at how thoroughly mellow they've turned recently, although their 2004 album with Chris Stamey, V.O.T.E., was a rockin' delight.

My favorite YLT, by far, is the deluxe edition of I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. It's a double cd set that includes the Little Honda ep. Not sure what I prefer most after that, but I still love their debut, Ride the Tiger, and their last release, Summer Sun as well as Fakebook.

I've only heard two, I Can Feel the Heart Beating As One and ...And Then The Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. I've considered looking into one of their shorter-named records, but I wasn't all that impressed with either of the long namers to follow up. I like ...And Then The Nothing quite a bit more than I Can Feel the Heart. Both records have one stellar song each, "Autumn Sweater" and "Tears Are In Your Eyes" being the two songs.

I don't know how you can listen to "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" and not think "We're an American Band" as being stellar. That's the greatest Yo La Tengo tune. Ira Kaplan is a freaking genius.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, I consider that album a perfect summer party album. Now, I admit that I've missed several albums this year, but it's hard for me to believe that CD isn't STILL one of the greatest Summer Party Albums. "Side 1" is basically "Dance Your Ass off" and "Side 2" is basically "Chill Your Ass off."
Sorry to beat such a beautiful dead horse.

Has anyone ever seen Yo La Tengo live because every time they've come around I've missed them. Actually one of my friends has seen them live it was a year back and she said they were really cocky. Still I love my timid Yo La Tengo. Can you please tell me if my friend made the correct assumption or not?

I don't know what they are when I don't see 'em. If any band deserves to br cocky, I'd go with them; if they weren't cocky, that's probably EVEN better.

I saw them two years ago when they played in Pittsbugh at a record store to about 50 or so people. It was the perfect place for a yo la tengo concert. Played a bunch of tracks from "I can hear the heart... " as i remember and they were very cool from the beginning. I don't know how you can think that Yo la tengo is cocky... they are the most laid back band I've seen.

this is an interesting topic here. i personally don't really like greatest hit collections. they make me think of NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC! and I don't like that.

I don't think they are cocky I was told by a friend who saw them live. I love Yo La Tengo I wouldn't say anything bad about them. That was just my friend's statement.

I was being a smartass, but really some bands catalog of music fits nicely into a greatest hits package. Other bands make great albums with very little filler and listening to a collection of somebody at a record companies favorite selections from their body of work is ridiculous. Yo La Tengo fits into the later.
I agree that a good discussion under another topic could be artists that have outstanding greatest hits packages (or in the world of downloading, do-it-yourself greatest hits packages) and who's catalog isn't worth digging into other than the hits.
