While the Metacritic Forum rules and codes of conduct preculde many commerical messages:

quote:
10. Do not post just to sell a product, promote a website, etc. Posts are for legitimate discussion of relevant topics only.

Our experiences with the Universal "street teams" have made it clear that there's a world a difference between somebody who clearly identifies themselves as having a commerical interest in what they're posting and somebody who is fulfilling their internship pretending to be a fan who just happens to want you to visit their favorite band's company-sponsored web site.

I could see room on the forums set aside specifically for threads of this kind, but that's an issue for the editors to decide.

There is a fine line between advertising and supporting a band. I think that our newest member falls under supporting, but just barely. Overall, I think that it is uncalled for and irritating, regardless of which side it falls under. I don't like the idea of becoming a member just to inform others about a band. IF one is a long time member and wants to mention an unknown band that is perfectly acceptable, but this sort of thing upsets me.

I think that it would be a great idea for a new forum for various threads similar to this. It would help guide our new members as to where exactly to put things like this. Although it would probably be ignored and threads such as these put under the actual music discussions, it might be a good first step.

Welcome to the site MB. Don't mean to offend you personally but this is a common site on the forum.

LT,

I would say that we should consider creating a spot within the music section for posts of this kind. Perhaps, "New Artist/Act Promotion" or something like that. If you want to create such a thread, and have all the moderators move future posts of this nature (excluding the Universal Sreet Team nonsense) to that thread, it might be a good thing, so as not clog up the forum with multiple threads dedicated to this kind of thing. I think we can live with a single, consolidated like that on a trial basis.

Good idea, MGE. A new topic area is a bigger step than a single thread, which should give us an idea of just how many of these we receive on an ongoing basis.

If I don't take care of it tonight, I'll try to get to it first thing in the morning.

I think that seems like a reasonable solution to the spamming/promotions problem. It won't go away, of course, but we can at least give them a place to ply their ways. After the shameless plug for 10,000 Things (who, oddly enough, are "their own best PR") and this plug, I say let them plug away. But put it in a thread that is easily avoidable by those who don't want to sold to.
