I'm trying to think of any math rock albums released this year aside from Ponytail (which is great) and Don Cabellero (which is great but only just leaked today).

Abe Vigoda and Pattern is Movement might fit in this category (according to a friend....)

i don't really think foals is math rock, to be honest. you could argue that ponytail is, so i'd definitely give them a big nod.

sorry, i realize i didn't really elaborate on that statement about foals. to me, they're much more dancy post-punk (in the vein of someone like dismemberment plan) than math rock. when i think of math rock, i think of crazy time signatures, sudden changes in direction, technical prowess, and complex song structures. foals are a fine band, and good musicians, i'm sure, but i just don't hear a lot of those elements in their music.

Alright, I can now make a top 3.

1. Don Cab - Punkgasm
2. Chocolat Billy - Attraper N'Anoun
3. Ponytail - Ice Cream Spiritual

#2 is by a french band which I just listened to! But I like their brand... very loose and playful, not as structurally sound as some math rock bands tend to be... also, this has some serious pop elements to it. It might be cheating to put it on here.. but it's pretty mathy.

What is it about math rock's crazy time signatures getting me dancing?

Okay, if Foals doesn't count, these two certainly don't.

Abe Vigoda is a tough call. I never feel right saying something is or isn't Math rock unless it clearly isn't... I'd say it's more on the not side though.

ok. ya, i saw them open for the faint in hollywood (me and my dad didnt even bother staying for the faint), and they were really good, as was shy child before them. there was a bunch of teeny boppers in the audience though that were just there for the faint and were yelling at shy child and abe vigoda...very annoying...

This year is disappointing for math rock. Only lame indie stuff that isn't really math rock. Also, Tera Melos isn't releasing a new LP therefore...

3. The Photographic - Pictures of a Changing World
2. Foals - Antidotes
1. Maps and Atlases - You, Me, and the Mountain

I consider foals math rock. I would also like to point out that they are AMAZING live.

Don Cab and Chocolat Billy are lame indie? Hmm... I wouldn't say Ponytail is lame either.

i just can't agree that foals are math rock (based on my earlier post's remarks on why it's not). but i will totally agree that maps and atlases has a lot of math rock qualities. i just recently got into them, and i think they're awesome. great drummer, great guitarists.
