I think the new YYYs is very good. I'm still not crazy about "Zero", but there's more than enough good tracks to make up for it.
It seems to me they're taking a lot of heat for not making another Fever To Tell, but like their fellow New Yorkers TV on the Radio, they've done a good job of trying to make a different sounding album every time they record.

Yah, except that was the exact same score I would have assigned to it (and I did, on my current list of albums for the best of 2009), so I think it's completely fair.
The album is excellent, and tracks that I initially disliked have come around to being quite enjoyable - it's not Fever To Tell, but Fever To Tell isn't It's Blitz! Pitchfork got this one right - this is an excellent offering from a great band.
"Hysteric" has to be their best song since "Maps."
And about that indie definition... what is "college radio?" Does anyone actually have a college radio station in their time? I know it refers to underground/alternative/"hip" artists, but apart from that, what purpose does it serve?

I find this album a rather tasteful approximation of the "electro" tag it's being slapped with. This album makes up for its restraint with dynamics, and though it's missing what made "Fever To Tell" and the "Is Is" EP so enthralling, it grabs hold after a couple of listens and makes its case that they can tastefully cross the streams of indie and so-called "electro." Hell, this still isn't the Killers, or even Franz Ferdinand for that matter, but I guess I understand why people are calling it Electro. But where those bands are more Duran Duran, "It's Blitz" is more New Order or even Depeche Mode at their prime. It's well above average, and an 8.1 is about right. The beginning kind of sags in my opinion, but from about "Dull Life" on it's golden [with some great moments in the beginning, but a kind of general sag].
By the way, the production is ace. It was still David Sitek, right?

I agree that this is sort of a back heavy album. IMO, it doesn't really kick off until "Soft Shock".

Dude, I'm really liking it. I just listened to it all the way through and not once was my attention lost. I've been disappointed by these albums this past week after my first few listens:
The Aliens - Luna My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges The Appleseed Cast - Sagarmatha ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - The Century of Self
321-PAIN

you love throwing out nonsensical presumptuous generalizations without a hint of evidence, don't you?
Are you slow, or do you find simple sentences hard to understand. Jglass stated that indie-electro music sucks, nothing nonsensical about his statement. Arguably there is ambiguity concerning what electro and indie mean, but it very much makes sense. The fact that electro music does generally suck isn't enough evidence?

I'm with you. I own everything YYYs have ever released, and I will not be buying this piece of sparkly wank. Didn't they used to have a guitarist? This sounds like a Karen O solo album.

Actually, it is Sitek and Nick Launay, who has worked with Talking Heads and Nick Cave, to name a few. It actually works out great considering this is an electronically-infused album.
This is a great release from a very great band. The fact that it's getting hated on is evidence that they tried something new and though some people will love it, others will love to hate it. Bottom line is that it is a great album. And yeah, the guitarist is here, in good fashion. Never lags nor sags; great album from start to bottom.
