I'm surprised at how much love this particular album is getting in comparison to their others. I was listening to Fake Can Be Just As Good a couple weeks back and it was kicking so much ass.

Outside of a few standout tracks -- 2, 6, 9 -- this album only strikes me as OK. And I'm a pretty big fan of the band.

Before 23, Melody... was my favorite of their records, though Fake Can Be Just As Good certainly had its merits. Now 23 is probably my favorite of their records.

It's definitely in my top ten, but may or may not end up in my top five by year's end.

Ya'll have been right all along, not that I doubted.

23 is one a gorgeous album, and EXACTLY what I was in the mood for hearing right now. I've been listening almost exclusively to Manitoba and The Books lately.

I think 2007 is already officially better than 2006, with 10 great albums and maybe 20 good albums.

Modest Mouse, Panda Bear, LCD Soundsystem, Menomena, Blonde Redhead, Eluvium, Andrew Bird, Do Make Say Think, Ted Leo, and The Besnard Lakes are all albums that I can listen to all the way through and completely appreciate. I love music.

Well, P4K only gave it a 7. That won't stop me from liking it, of course.

il love 23 as much as Misery but you have to admit that they're getting away from the sound they started out with which was a more art-rock noisy type. now it's much more polished and produced. but i don't mind. i find it easier to listen to their last two than the first few

I've come to the conclusion, over the years, that P4K is comprised entirely of douchebags who really don't have that great of a taste in music, no matter how much they tell us they do.

I think Pitchfork is good at finding out about music that I haven't heard of, but I disagree with them sometimes. Definitely about this.

It's funny... reading the review almost suggests a rating below 7.0...

Anyways, the Stylus review is better written, and the score is a little more accurate, I think. Wink

I don't really agree with what that pitchfork reviewer has to say, but the score seems pretty accurate.

Well, let me rephrase that: I don't agree with his quips about the production on the new album shadowing/hindering the songwriting. However, I do agree that 23 sounds like an amalgamation of their past two albums, although not quite as good as either. I think overall the songwriting on Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons outshines the new album, while the excellent production and arrangements of Misery Is A Butterfly are superior to 23 as well.

I wouldn't go that far, but this review does seem a little amateurish. I can agree to disagree, critics just have opinions after all. I think they underrated Modest Mouse (by about a point), but the review was very accurate and I enjoyed reading it.
The 23 review seemed like it came from a lesser source, and I think it was about 2 points low.
Oh well.

I would've agreed with an 8.0... but I think it deserves a 9. Oh well, I don't pay their scoring any attention.

If it's any consolation, according to Metacritic Pitchfork is on the low end of the spectrum as far as reviews go. Last time I checked, it had a 86 metascore, which is damn good.
