I'm slightly disappointed in this new one. I like all of their albums to varying degrees but this one lacks some of the magic that made Misery is a Butterfly so mesmerizing. It just seems flat and the songs kind of run together. I prefer the old mid-90's noisier stuff to these records anyway though.

I don't know anything else of theirs, but anything described as "mid-90's noisier" is intriguing. I've read Steve Shelley works with them a lot and I'm a huge Sonic Youth fan, so I'd love to try something older of theirs. Which do you recommend?

This album may be slightly more derivative than previous efforts, but it's enjoyable. Not on par with the band's best material though.
My favorite Blonde Redhead album is Fake Can Be Just As Good. If you like Sonic Youth, you should really dig this album. Great no wave pop.
As for specific songs, "Luv Machine" was the song that really turned me on to the band.

I second Fake Can Be Just as Good. The first two records, Blonde Redhead and La Mia Vita Violenta are very much in the vein of Sonic Youth. Most of the reviews of those records complained that Blonde Rehead were a Sonic Youth ripoff if memory serves me correct. They're great records though, especially if you like mid-80's SY from Bad Moon Rising up through Sister.

Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons has to be my favorite Blonde Redhead album! Actually, I haven't listened to that record in awhile (I'm going to go look for it now ).

Melody... is a great record too. Out of all of their albums, only In an Expression of the Inexpressable and this new one, 23, don't do much for me.

I might actually like 23 more as an album, though "In Particular" is definitely still my favorite song of theirs.

I think it's funny how Hophead asked where to start after 23 and you guys basically told him to go out and just grab every blonde redhead album. I second that opinion. Get 'em all, they all offer something gorgeous. And I love 23, I think it holds up to all their previous albums, even if it has taken a softer tone. P.S. I just watched the movie Hard Candy and the song over the credits is "Elephant Woman".

When Blonde Redhead put out Misery is a Butterfly, it was their first album moving from Touch & Go to 4AD. Look at 4AD's history, they put out Cocteau Twins records, and that particular Blonde Redhead record ( Misery) sounds very Cocteau Twins-esque. It makes perfect sense.

Yeah, In An Expression Of the Inexpressible isn't that great on the whole, but it has some amazing songs.

I disagree! "Spring and By Summer Fall" is excellent!

The entire album is now currently streaming on http://myspace.com/blonderedhead if you'd like a preview. I love that more and more bands are doing that now; I don't download a lot of leaks and it's a great way to decide if it's worth my money or not. In this case, absolutely.

Thanks a bunch, blueskyoas. I also love the idea of artists/bands streaming their albums for all to hear. Although not all of them do it, it is a great resource.
