So, I snagged this record because everyone's been raving about it in chat and at pfork and everywhere else.
All I can say is, 'gimme a break'. I'm so sick of this formulaic, uninspired indie crap that's starting to come out. First we have Vampire Weekend, boring. Now we've got Fleet Foxes that sound like a freakin' My Morning Jacket ripoff. Do we need another Wolf Parade? No. Do we need another Band of Horses? No. Do we need another My Morning Jacket? No.
I'm not saying that the members of Fleet Foxes or Vampire Weekend suck as musicians, i'm just saying 'go find your own sound, quit copying what others have already done'. Isn't that what indie is supposed to be about, not copying other bands just to sell records?
Sometimes people just need to stop writing songs and sit down and listen to a Led Zeppelin record. Bring back the good times baby!
I do agree with you on the Sun Giant Ep, it's pretty bland overall, and really doesn't bring much to the table. However, I do, surprisingly, like their upcoming debut. It's still not very original, like most music, but it doesn't really ape MMJ or anything (although the singers are very similar). In fact, I'd say it's better than any MMJ cd, but I don't really like them.
If you look at most of my posts, I usually am into more unique or at least experimental than Fleet Foxes, but in this case, I think they pulled it off.
I still would consider it a really great album, but it's definetely quality.

As for ripoffs, at least their copying respectable artists. I'm still annoyed at the "mainstream" influences which is just vomit inducing.
Good to hear that the upcoming album is better than the EP that's out. I recently bought the ep, buying the hype, and was left unimpressed. It's not terrible, just bland.
I haven't listen to the EP but I grabbed the debut after seeing them live and it's pretty good. They were a lot better live, but that's the way it should be...

Agreed. How's Texas? Better than St. Pete I bet, especially for seeing live acts
Alright! Im sooooo down to hate on vampire weekend. They are like an indie boy band but way shittier. As for Fleet Foxes, I agree the Sun Giant ep is slightly bland, but check out Ragged Wood if you can. I think it's pretty impressive.

I liked being able to walk to the beach but that's what getting my parents to pay to fly me home for a weekend every now and then is for... other than that, Tx OWNS florida in every way. There's so much hype by Texans with their state (is there any other state where every car has a state pride bumper sticker?? And every person owns a state pride shirt?!)... but I understand why. You won't see me wearing a "Don't mess with Texas" shirt, but I've been having a great time.
I'm gonna be seein' Caribou at the Crowbar (going home for a few days for my dad's bday), you goin'?
Yeah... it was only a couple months ago haha. I believe it's april 6th but I'm too lazy to check. I know that it's during my visit (I planned it that way) so it's between april 4th and 8th.
I really love this EP and I think it is one of the best things released all year. I can't download these since I am at work but they did a Daytrotter Session today and the songs sound fantastic. Here is the link to the main Daytrotter site.
----- If you don't love me, I'm sorry.

I'd wager that 90% of the really terrific bands people deride as "rip-offs" didn't consciously borrow anything from anyone. When you've got guitars and singers and drums, there isn't much you can do that isn't going to sound like something somebody's already done. Bringing in a lot of "experimental" sounds or instrumentation I more than half the time find boring, alienating and contrived. That having been said, I can not get with the Beach House vibe. That's what I hear here - or a more straightforward Animal Collective. But even though I don't really dig it (so far), I'd much, much rather hear a band that sets out to make great songs and great music than a band that sets out to do something KRAZAY and NEW.
The big thing that makes me think of MMJ when I listen to Fleet Foxes are the vocals - they're identical.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.
