Yeah, that's where I first noticed her. "Best of our generation" may be hyperbole, but it was definitely quite excellent.

A truer word has never been spoken. I think the release date on the album is questionable at best. What better time to release some Simon-inspired summer jams? Why the dead of winter, of course! Honestly, like "Beyond" last year, I won't be able to fully appreciate this album until it gets above seventy and I can chill on the beach and listen to it. The question is: will I still care about it by the time summer rolls around or will it be replaced by one of the numerous summer releases that are bound to leak around mid-May?

If you don't care about the band being a bunch of college kids with rich parents, why was this in your initial post? If it didn't bother you, you probably wouldn't have mentioned they were ivy league. Anyway, I quite like the album. I imagine it is becoming a bit too mainstream for some. Heck, my 7 year old loves the A-Punk video, and she mostly listens to Hannah Montana. I quite understand some not liking the sound though. It is awfully "poppy".

Ok, Built...you did catch me there a bit. I'm admitting that p4k perpetuated that claim in my head. I would of hated it either way, but I dislike how they gave a face to it, especially since they like the album. I guess I expect more from highly educated musicians. Look at Radiohead, they went to Oxford or Cambridge or whatever and they are flat out geniuses. I will bump up the post that mentions that maybe this album will be better in some 70 degree weather smoking a j. I'll try it out.

I think it's rather odd that they are selling out huge venues. Aren't those reserved for bands with some actual musical substance? Yeah the music might be fun in the summer if I was way stoned, but even then it seems like it would get boring pretty quickly. Maybe in a few months people will be all "Oh man. Ok this is getting old." It just bothers me how so many more bands who are so much better and have been playing for longer than those ass clowns have been alive are still under the radar and struggling to make a living. But then again, there is no justice. Meh.

You will know when a genius arrives in this world, for a confederacy of dunces will be against them. I came to Vampire Summer after hearing them on the radio. I knew nothing of their background. It was enough to hear their extremely accomplished debut. (and I don't use drugs)

I might have been one of the first people to say they were not too impressed with Vampire Weekend. Now let it be said that this is a very solid, very good album that deserves to be counted among the year's best... so far.

I'm sure that is sometimes true. If it were always true, I guess a bunch of us would be wrong about our Presidente.

Oh, it's definetley up there in the best of 2008. But let's not forget that 2008 so far has been an extremely weak year.

Remember guys that a lot of the original hype came from the "Blue CD-R" (proud owner!). For a demo that was one of the best things I've heard. I still enjoy the demo much more then the official release even though M79 is a great track. They've come extremely far so fast. It's a pleasant surprise.

This must be what it felt like to not like Funeral when it was released...

Hah! That's how I felt about Okkervil River's release last year. I'm not saying Vampire Weekend's first album is Funeral. Far from it. But it's a solid, fun, and somewhat addictive album. It's not going to change my life or anything, but it's good fun for sure. Like I said, 08's been a weak year so far (at least, in my eyes) so this stands out a little brighter than it probably should.

I thought it was pleasant enough but not really worth another listen. If I want pop there are better things to listen to, and if I want substance I'm not finding it here. Kind of fits in that "in-between" category for me. But I don't have any anger towards them for being successful, either. It's understandable. Everything cycles around again after 20 years or so..

Now listen here O & O! If you take the time to listen closely to the album again, you will hear far more than a bit of Graceland-ish emulation. In fact, try going back 40 yrs to the Kinks and yr own beloved (and mine) Zombies you will hear the sticky fingerprints (sorry, mixed metaphors) of these and other wonderful which has beautifully adapted and developed. To paraphrase Colin Blunstone, 'This will be their year for a long time to come'
'for my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset, and the baths of all the western stars, until I die.'

The Kinks AND the Zombies? Maybe I'll have to give them another shot.
