Hmm. I'm sorta feeling like part of a "reactionary fan base", being overly critical of any new directions for a band and demanding that they put out the same album five times. I do not like this feeling because, on principle, I think it is a harmful thing to do. The kneejerk reaction to that song felt so true that I just knew everybody would agree with me.
EDIT: Stylus is digging. Comparisons to the Fiery Furnaces make me v. sad.

Actually, when bands I like retread their previous material, then I feel kind of disappointed. It's like "Dude, if I want music that sounds like this, I can listen to the other album that's probably better than this." (Re: Guero)
If the Flaming Lips next album (Whenever it finally comes out, those release-delaying bastards) sounded exactly like Yoshime, I would be bored by it. I love it when bands I like go in new directions.

I read that article, Vykromond. Darnielle is a good writer. That bit about a "very long war" was hilarious. Even though my music tastes differ quite a bit from his, I still read his columns.

I've only just started listening to "Fingers Crossed" (on Sweetie's recommendation), so I can't speak for the aptness of the comparison, but yet another review of "In Case We Die" compares it to the Fiery Furnaces. Maybe there is something there after all.

Wow, I can't beleive that got written on amazon.com about AIH! How could you! I in no way think they were wrong in making private contact about that review as it is kinda cruel.
Cemetary is a good track. Not my favorite on the album, but not a wretched track as people have portrayed it as.
Fingers Crossed is quite a bit different from In Case We Die and for quite a while before the new album people were telling me that it was going to be nothing like Fingers Crossed and I would be disspointed. I am not at all. The new album is different but wonderful in a whole new way.
I don't quite get why people compare them to Fiery Furnaces so much... I can kinda see where they are coming from, but I would never make the connection.

I haven't actually heard more than a cut or two from Fiery Furnaces, but AiH don't really strike me as pretentious or experimental, so I'm wondering exactly what the comparison is.

Agree with you Bob. I haven't picked up Geuro yet, too.
I love changes from the Lips, Radiohead, Beck, QOTSA, etc. Bands like Stone Temple Pilots, and The Cardigans got boring fast after great 1st and (maybe) 2nd albums because of re-hash after re-hash.

I don't agree with what you're saying about Stone Temple Pilots. Core was a grunge album, and quite a good one too. Purple and Tiny Music were anything but formulaic grunge. Things went downhill a bit for their final two albums, but they never settled into a clearly "STP" sound.
I guess that's a reason to be excited about AiH. Like Stone Temple Pilots, their style can veer into uncomfortable territories. But that constant internal conflict of whether it's crap or brilliant makes it more interesting, though 9 times out of 10, it's brilliant.
I'm not saying that Architecture In Helsinki sound anything like Stone Temple Pilots, because they don't.

The only STP album I still think is good as a whole is Purple. A few others have one or two good songs (Plush, Don't Cut Out My Paper Heart, Sour Girl), but I don't listen to them anymore.
They don't vary their sound very much at all, though. I'm glad Beck and Flaming Lips do.

Hmm..Pitchfork made another Fiery Furnaces comparison. I guess I kind of see a comparison in the frivelousness of it. But I have difficulty comparing a good band to a mediocre band without implying derivation. (Glad they gave it an 8.8 though. Guess it's not only good, it's hip!)
