I was just perusing through TMT and noticed that they have an Avant section called Eureka! Pretty good section. Mentioning TMT, they have that California box set currently on the chopping block looks (reads) like a pretty good collection of noise from the area. I didn't even know they had a scene like that there. I don't think I was familiar with any of the bands they mentioned were a part of the comp. I was just looking back at the review again...10 LPs! That thing is gigantic.
I miss this ole thread. Hey JB did you see that Wolf Eyes are going on tour? I cannot believe they are gracing SLC, UT. Hah! I'm way excited.
I was retreading the discussion here and noticed the comments about the inability to find a place to purchase a Double Leopards album. I understand most are limited but I have found A Hole Is True on !!amazon!! I thought it was kind of funny. There is only one left. I don't know if you were even looking for that album because I think it is one of the more available of their releases but just thought I'd post.
As far as wondering if anyone has heard of artists, who has albums or has heard a great deal from the following?
I always forget to mention it but one of my absolute favourite avant albums to come out last year was The Kallikak Family. Did you ever hear that record. Absolutely 100% wonderful.
Amen. That is one occasion where the concept seems to give the recording an extra dimension - not that it wasn't gorgeous to begin with, but the creepy fortune teller thing put it over the top.

Islaja Mouthus Feathers
I'm a fan of Islaja. I studied for a year in helsinki, so I'm a bit partial to those crazy finns. If you like islaja you should definitely look for paavoharju. They're not really in the psych folk circle (they're from savonlinna, which is kind in the middle of nowhere), but definitely worth checking out.
I have a friend who is pretty into feathers, but I haven't gotten to them or mouthus yet.

re: feathers - david garland, indie rock/avant garde radio master, did a whole show on feathers. if you don't know about david garland, you better ask sumbody! or click this: http://www.wnyc.org/shows/spinning/episodes/2006/06/04
i don't like feathers, but david garland does a pretty great job most of the time, and i remembered this so i thought i'd post it.
in other news: i just bought three albums from the joan of arc universe, including maybe the best tim kinsella release, s/t by Owls...sort of on the indie rock side of avant. the two joan of arc cd's i bought (old one-"live in chicago, 1999" and new one-"eventually, all at once") are on the folksier side of avant. tim's lyrics and voice are crazy, as always, but that's why i love him.
i also bought the sebestien roux/greg davis colab "parquet surprise", which is a very awesome kinda-experimental electronic album with a couple gold pop moments. it is the high point in both artists' discographies, i think. this album more so than the joan of arc related releases is something that fits in with some of the earlier discussion of experimental/noise/ambient/electronic stuff, and should be checked out if you haven't heard.

So anyway to answer your questions Sicnarf. I am definitely into Mouthus. Their newest LP The Long Salt is one of my favorite records to come out this year. It's some seriously sick clattering tape noise shit. I reviewed it for DOA a few months ago. It sounds just like Dead C from New Zealand. I'm not sure if you're familiar with them, but they were on a label called Siltbreeze. A good deal of the Siltbreeze catalog is out of print. Anyway some of the guys from Dead C had another similar band afterward called Gate that is also really good.
As for the Wolf Eyes thing. I'm going to see them at The Drunken Unicorn in ATL in October. That's where I saw them last year and it was awesome. Have you heard the new record yet, Human Animal? I downloaded it the other day. Totally sick. Similar to Burned Mind but you can also hear some of their earlier records, Dread in particular, in there. Mike Connolly from Hair Police is a full-time member and there are similarities on the first half of the record to Hair Police's Constantly Terrified album that came out on Troubleman last year. But seriously, it's already in my top albums of the year.
Don't know if anyone else here is into spazzy grindcore, but I got a promo copy of the new Daughters record too. Good but the vocals are way different than the last album. Sounds like The Birthday Party meets Melt-Banana.

Ahhh!
You have the new Daughters!?! I'm excited for that cd. I listened to a couple new songs on their MySpace. Sounds pretty great. Do you like it as much as Canada songs? Are you familiar with Tiny Hawks at all? Pretty good noise rock duo from Providence. I am really like their new record.
I haven't heard Tiny Hawks, but I keep seeing their name everywhere. I'll have to look into that.
The new Daughters record is really good. I didn't love it at first though. I am a huge fan of Canada Songs and the one-sided 7" they put out, which I think is still the single best thing they've ever done. The new record has maybe one part on the whole record with screaming. The rest of it now has Lex singing like Nick Cave back when he was in the Birthday Party. Musically, it's more of the same Melt-Banana/The Locust/Pig Destroyer grindcore. It's definitely grown on me.
I've been listening to Mouthus' The Long Salt and I'm absolutely floored. This is really one of the best things I have heard all year. I'm going to have to look into Dead C. Have you ever listened to Pandatone? I just listened to Lemons and Limes today and am very happy about them. Wonderful peoples.
Additionally I've never got around to getting a Boredoms cd. I know I know. I really want to road trip out to that show in Philly I think it is with the Boredoms and Lightning Bolt. You have any favourite Boredoms albums? Have you heard any of the recently reissued stuff?
Sorry, just noticed the boredoms question. I was in the same camp with JB until a couple days ago I started listening to chocolate synthesizer. I own Super AE (P4K's fave), and I've heard vision creation newsun several times. Super AE still holds up well, but I'm not digging VCNS so much anymore. just too repetitive and samey. It's good for cleaning the house or something, but not so good for holding your interest. Today I believe that Chocolate Synthesizer has surpassed Super AE for pure enjoyability. It is a hell of a lot of fun, whereas Super AE had more thought and psychedelic effects stuff put in it.
I would actually recommend chocolate synthesizer over super ae. It's closer to a real band sound - not so much of yamatsuka eYe putting shit in after the fact. "b for boredoms" puts a shit eating grin on my face everytime I hear it, and then I have to go and listen to the rest of the album several times in a row (which is very unusual for me).
Ha! I just got Super Ae and Vision Creation Newsun but that doesn't mean I won't look into Chocolate Synthesizer. We'll just have to see how these two play out for me.
it depends on how spazzy you are. Early boredoms are like acid dada punk. Over the years the punk part of their sound erodes away. I've had a resurgence of appreciation for my inner spaz (I appreciate xtc's first album much more than most reviews I've read), so CS hits the spot for me. I still haven't really gotten into that spaz-grindcore stuff (yet - it's on my list) that JB was talking about, although I do like the locust.
I'll have to check out Chocolate Synthesizer. I don't have that one. For now I still stand behind my statement that Vision Creation Newsun is the best in the Boredoms catalog. It's basically a krautrock record made 30 years too late. I can't really challenge the notion that it's "too samey" as Vitunkrapula suggests, but I think you need a sense of continuity for making a record like that. Have either of you guys heard Pop Tatari? I picked it up a few months back and I've only listened to it once and wasn't really all that impressed.
I haven't heard a whole lot of pop tatari, but I'm guessing that if you didn't like that you probably wouldn't like chocolate synthesizer. I don't think I would be such a fan of chocolate synthesizer if I hadn't skipped past the first track - acid police. Plus the yamatsuka eYe/boredoms videos on youtube gave me a whole new perspective on their early stuff. I learned they like to put objects on their heads when they play (floor toms, completely head-covering beanies, mic stands, gas masks, etc). Which is really irrelevant, but it makes me giddy all the same.
I don't know. I like most of the other early Boredoms records, especially the Super Roots series stuff. I think mostly I found Pop Tatari disappointing because according to the Allmusic Guide it was supposed to be the best album out of their catalog. In retrospect, I think the fact that they gave it 4.5 stars while Super Ae, Vision Creation Newsun, and some of the Super Roots records only got 3 stars speaks volumes about how much I disagree with them.
Wow. I haven't looked too closely at AMG's boredoms discog. Kind glad I haven't now. I haven't gotten to the super roots stuff yet. All in good time...
I am preparing (after much anticipation) to begin purchasing the Disintegration Loops by William Basinski. Which are most accessible/good. I'll probably end up getting all of them anyway but just curious for dome feedback on them.
