I have been listening to Kurt Weisman's Spiritual Sci-fi lately after it got 'Eureka'-ed by TMT. The album is really incredible. I can't stop listening to it. The title track is one of the best I have heard all year. Anyone else down?

I've also been down with that album after reading about it in the Eureka! section. It's pretty damn interesting. It kind of reminds me of a mixture of John Cale and AnimalCollective... something to do with the the lo-fi, the textures, and the vocal treatments. Oh, and my gf made me turn off Khora because it was creeping her out. I need to give it more time but it was intriguing.

I'm really enjoying Deterioration, the new release by Yellow Swans. Looking forward to hearing Khora.

I agree, the new Yellow Swans is great, I think I like it more than anything they've done before, especially the opener, Time Stretch. The Kurt Weisman album I need to give another listen to, but my first few listens I was not to impressed. It seems to be great in parts and annoying in others.
Anyway, does anyone here like Warmer Milks? I don't see a lot of talk about him. They consistently release great albums, taking a new approach on every one of them. They are first and foremost a more psychedelic noise rock band (a bit like Raccoo-oo-oon I suppose, but with tribal influences kept to a minimum)but at anytime, they can be a punk or hardcore band, a drone band, or possibly a folk rock band. Perhaps the most notable thing about them is how they are able to remain so focused through all this.
On their new album, Soft Walks, they almost completely move away from their more experimental influences and instead play pretty straightforward folk rock along the lines of Neil Young and Will Oldham. Overall it's a pretty great and well done album, at the very least a sincere one.
I also recommend their earlier albums, like Radish on Light, which is one of my favorite albums of the decade. This shows their punkier and more psychedelic side. Also Let Your Friends in from last year, which is similar, but with more drone and folk influences (think Jandek).
Definitely an underrated band.

I've been listening to that Yellow Swans album pretty much non-stop along with that Burning Star Core album Challenger. Really fun stuff. I'm waiting for Ipecac to release that new Zach Hill solo album.

Isn't that 'new' Yellow Swans a reissue? Seems like they had a million releases last year of which I only caught three ( At All Ends, Drowner, Descension). They are still coming out with one more full length before they are officially split up at the end of the year right? Anyone here into the Rune Grammafon stuff? That new Elephant9 album is pretty great, better than average for the label I think.

The new Yellow Swans was originally released on cd-r last year, but only this year is seeing a proper release. Also, I do remember seeing somewhere that their last studio release won't even come until 2009, so we still have a few albums to hear from them. That's great news because, while I don't particularly care for their new stuff, I have been loving the cds they've released recently.
As for the Elephant9 release, I haven't heard it, but I've listened to the samples on their myspace and they sound great. I plan on picking it up as soon as possible. I also heard a couple new songs from MoHa! and they sounded worthwhile as well.
Speaking of Rune Grammafon, has anyone heard the Ultralyd release from last year? It's called Conditions for A Piece of Music. It's really great. It's an electroacoustic album with a lot of jazz influences. I believe Tinymixtapes gave it a good review last year.

I thought it was released this year, but their site confirms that they released it last year. I grabbed it on a whim but have yet to listen to it because I've been making a "best of the century (so far)" top 50.

Two seperate Khora reviews from JBrisby so far. That album is pretty nuts. Heads up: The Fun Years' Baby, It's Cold Inside is a modern masterpiece IMO . Even better than their debut last year. You should chek it out if you like Basinski, Jelinek, Jeck, Eluvium, blah blah... I love it.

I do love Aufgehoben! I'm going to have to check out that Fun Years album since you mentioned Basinski, Jelinek, and Jeck who are all fantastic and I'm down with some Eluvium too so....

Hey Sicnarf, you wouldn't happen to be Mr Thistle over at Forest Gospel would you? I read another excellent Khora review there as well by a writer with the aforementioned name. Any of you guys heard Windy Weber from Windy & Carl's new drone record I Hate People? Just picked it up yesterday.

Oh, and speaking of good records. Aside from Aufgehoben and The Fun Years - the self titled Women debut is just about my favourite thing containing actual songs that I have heard all year. Anyone else heard this gem?

We've discussed it a few times in "Best of 2008"... I made fun of someone for calling it atonal or something. But yeah, a wonderful mixture of pop and sound experiments.

The New Burning Star Core is pretty good. This is the first I have listened to of his. Anyone familiar with his earlier output?

As for Burning Star Core, are you referring to Challenger? I haven't heard it yet but I've heard good things. I like C. Spencer Yeh's Solo Violin album and the Burning Star Core record, The Very Heart of the World alot though.
