yeah beaches and canyons definitely has the swells and more interesting dynamics. but load blown seems like the danciest record they've put out. i really like it as well.
hermaphrodite is great...the first 6 tracks especially. i like how much world beat sound he has incorporated into it.
Not sure about when the Aufgehoben record is coming out. When I interviewed them they said it would be called Khora which is also the title scrawled on the CD-R version they sent. Since then I haven't seen anything at all about it on the Holy Mountain website and I was told by the band that they were releasing it just like Messidor. The version I have is not the version that's going to be released. They told me that at least one of the pieces had been re-edited since they sent me the CD-R so it would have a more powerful effect (not sure how that's possible). I can't wait to see what the artwork will look like and have a real copy in my hands. The sooner the better. All I can say is that it's fucking incredible and it will be out this year sometime.
Just listened to Messidor again the other day and I am so excited for a new Aufgehoben album. Holy Mountain has actually released a few albums lately that I am unfamiliar with. Anyone listened to any of the recent five or so that they released? I'm kind of interested in Who's Your Favorite Son God?
I haven't kept up with new releases on Holy Mountain but it looks like they have some interesting stuff coming up. The Aufgehoben record is mentioned in their website update from a day or two ago but there is no release date mentioned for it yet but the title is still going to be Khora.
I just found a live, demo, and unreleased tracks album from a couple years back for Clipd Beaks... I don't think they had really released much prior to this but that's beside the point.
The double album (Robo Gnomes: Live and Unreleased 2003-Present and Robo Gnomes: Majik Moments 2003-Infinity) presents a much more raw, gritty, and free band. A few ppl have likened Hoarse Lords sound to Liars; on this album you can hear the band streamline their sound from a more chaotic, organic place.
If you like the band or thought they were ok but needed a bit less structure, this is the album for you to check out.
Hey guys. I've always wanted to get involved in this thread but I guess I'm a little out of my element. Two things: Please describe the tenor of the thread as it is now; meaning, how has the thread evolved? Or: What does Avant Garde mean in '08? Secondly, could you point me to some revealing releases, preferrably from '08. BTW, how has '08 been for Avant Garde releases so far?
It's been pretty damn slow. It's strange since avant-garde/experimental groups (esp. in the noise/drone area) tend to put out several releases each year.
So far from the year, I'd tell you to pick up And, Still Wanting by Prurient for a great noise album. Sadly, that's all I can think of from this year.
Which one? There are two, I believe... Free Gold! and We Are the Wild Beast. We Are the Wild Beast is excellent but I haven't listened to Free Gold!, yet.
We Are the Wild Beast is 2006, but yes it is very good. Thank you for reminding me about this though, I had forgotten they were releasing a new one. So far it sounds very promising.
Yea, I was talking about Free Gold. I only heard a few tracks, but I really liked them. We Are The Wild Beast is pretty good too. I like that they sort of have a messed up sense of humor.
I wasn't even aware of its release date... I had never been able to find much from them before until the album randomly popped up a couple months back... I guess I'm glad I left it off my top list then haha
Lately I have been killing all sorts of breakcore. Whenever I'm driving I put on breakcore, whenever I'm hanging out I put on breakcore, whenever I feel like listening to an album it's breakcore.
Although I am listening to April on my gf's comp. right now. But when I drop her off at work and go home-- breakcore.
Yeah, Indian Jewelry tricked me with the first release this year. From what I understand the album is even older than 2006. I read that it was first released in 2003 under the moniker NTX + Electric. It is still pretty good though.
Avant Garde is a pretty wide spanning banner. Here are some of my favourite from 2008 that I would consider Avant Garde:
Scott Tuma - Not For No One Aaron Martin - River Water The Child Readers - Music Heard Far Off Who Is Your Favourite Son God? - Out of Body Diva Bulbs - Light Ships Tomasz Bednarcyzk - Summer Feelings
Sadly, Greg (guitar/synth dude) from Clipd Beaks left the band about a month ago. The rest of the dudes are pushing on now as Clipd Boys. Check their tunes out; they're sounding really loose but still bleak. They're starting to really develop their style it seems like.
Also, the new Black Pus album was released. Black Pus has Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale. They give away their albums for free on Faux Fetus, but Faux Fetus is currently down. I'd say that the immediate stand-out tracks are "The Wise Toad" and "Body On the Tide".
Grails new one leaked. Haven't had a chance to listen.

I've only gotten a few tracks into Resin before my girlfriend started requesting Sung Tongs. I really want to get back to it though. Maybe once she goes to work I'll put it on.
I don't know if any of you guys are Skullflower fans, but Matthew Bower has a new record called Desire for a Holy War. Just got it in the mail today. I'll let you know if it's worth your time once I give it a spin.
I'm only three minutes into the first track of Resin and I'm already really enjoying it.
BUT. I'll report back once I've given it a more thorough listening, of course. Whenever a track from It's After Dark comes on when I have random on I always enjoy it, but whenever I sit to listen to it I never seem to catch the right mood. How does that make sense?
