album leads me to believe that they need to show more restraint, and then they turn around and show too much restraint for me on the second half. Either way, there are some great songs on GAame, such as Manshake, New
grabblegarr is right - I really like Aa. GAame is actually in my top ten.
On another topic. I just noticed that Birchville Cat Motel released his 3rd full length this year on Important with help from Matthew Bower. I've listened to a bit of it and it sounds like some of his older stuff like Chi Vampires. Really great.
could you recommend any other musicians/bands with a sounds similar to Aa that i may not have heard of?
First and foremost I'd go with Boredoms, especially Vision Creation Newsun. Now that I think about it OOIOO would be a good one too, they rely heavily on their rhythm section like Aa. I'd also say Raccoo-oo-oon would be a good one. They're a lot darker and heavier, but they share the same tribal feel that Aa has. They also share a lot in common with Liars' Drum's Not Dead and Animal Collective's Here Comes the Indian, but you've probably heard those already.

Vision Creation Newsun is one of my all time favorite albums. I really dig later Boredoms stuff (Seadrum might be my favorite song ever). OOIOO has never hit quite same chord with me though. I've liked what little I have heard of Raccoo-oo-oon, but I can't find the album on any torrent websites for the life of me (and with $2 in my bank account after paying winter quarter tuition, i think saving money for food will be my top priority rather than buying the album). As far as Liars and Animal Collective, they are also two of my favorite bands.
I appreciate the recommendations - feel free to keep them coming.

Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been, Or weep as I could once have wept, o'er many a vanished scene; As springs in deserts found seem sweet, all brackish though they be, So, midst the withered waste of life, those tears would flow to me.

I would also recommend self titled Health album and Clipd Beaks albums released this year. Judging by your tastes those should enjoyable. You might also like Kemialliset Ystavat's most recent release.

FLAC or V0 on the vinyl rip of Mok Nok? I finally stopped being lazy.
Are you talking about the Danish band Mok Nok? I'm quite surprised that anyone outside Denmark know them. I haven't even myself had the chance to check them out yet.
That is who I'm talking about sir... and I've still been too lazy to upload the vinyl rip although I've already made the rip.
My favorite boredoms is most definitely the "Early Boredoms" album... which is less tribal than their later stuff but incredible.
Yeah, HEALTH is probably the best rec for him, but I'm pretty sure he posted about them earlier somewhere so I didn't say anything. But I couldn't agree more on Clipd Beaks, I've had the album for at least 6 months now and it's been one of my favorites of the year the whole time. The packaging is really cool too.

You were lucky to get that album so early.. and I'll thank you once again for pointing me in their direction.
Just heard Yellow Swans' Descension EP and I like it even better than their full length (which is incredible). I also noticed that Mouthus' new album got an 8.5 on Pitchfork which is suprising and well deserved.

I really don't get the massive critical reception for the new Mouthus record. I love those guys but this is their weakest in a while by far. Though parts of it sound like later Swans material, what with the acoustic bits and all, the rest of it just seems like more of the same stuff they were doing on Follow This House. Definitely not a bad album per se, but 8.5??? That's basically saying that it's a better record than a ton of other noise records that are way better. In WIRE they said it was the best Mouthus record so far. It makes no sense to me whatsoever and I would count myself among a small number of people that are diehard Mouthus fans.
I don't have every mouthus record but I do agree that the noisier elements of this record aren't blazing any new trails. I just think as a whole the album flows better with the acoustic tracks. Regardless of whether it is worthy of the Pitchfork/Wire praise in comparison to past efforts, it is definitely another solid release in their catalog.
I've only listened to the Mouthus record once, but I didn't think it was anything special, though definitely not bad. As for the Yellow Swans EP, I need to get on that too. I liked At All Ends quite a bit.
And thanks Jackson for the download, I'm downloading it right now.
Anyone wanna help me out with finding more Japanese noise punk type stuff, such as Melt-Banana and Boredoms? I've been listening to a ton of Melt Banana and Boredoms lately so something related would be nice.
Funny you should mention that, as I just recently got into the album Mellow Out by Mainliner. It's incredible. Not too much in common with Melt-Banana or Boredoms, it's more of an incredibly heavy psychedelic rock album, but it is noisy and it is Japanese.
Would someone be kind enough as to post the publication's end of year lists, for souls such as my deprived self, here in the backwaters of China?
All the lists, please? Best of and genre picks? Thankee muchly.
I guess rocklist.com will have them up eventually, but it would be cool to discuss the lists here with like minded folk.

What about this LA band HEALTH? With brash guitars, thumping drum/fuzz, and unintelligible chant like lyrics, I think they fit the Avant-Garde label pretty well.
As I said before, I like that HEALTH album, but I think a little more downtime and repetition for them would go a long long way.
Some albums I've been listening lately, that are at least semi-pertinent to this thread.
Mercury Rev- Yerself is Steam Before David Baker left this band after their second album, they played loud, chaotic psychedelic pop with influences ranging from the Red Krayola style freekouts to Joy Division. Basically, they brought the fucking noise. It was on a constant rotation a while back, and just recently it has made its way back in. Great album, probably my favorite of the 90's, just ahead of Unwound's Fake Train and Mercury Rev's second album, Boces (maybe I'm a bit of a fan boy.)
Red Red Meat- There's a Star Above the Manger From fans and critics responses alike, I'd say this is almost THE most underrated album of all time. This is a great crossover over album, being just as much roots rock as it is expiremental. It's very bluesy all throughout, occasionally veering off into noisy and repetitious jams a la the Velvet Underground.
Nepredvidive Dede- I kao sto sam rek'o I'm sure I've posted about this before, but what the hell. This band doesn't really consider themselves a band, as they get together on 4 times a year to record and release a free, streaming album on Last.fm. The music is entirely improvisational and very well done. I suppose I could call it "free jazz" but it also borrows heavily from the more rhythmic and repetitive kraut rock of the 70's.
Anatrofobia- Brevi Momenti di Presenza I took a chance on this, as I don't usually buy albums unless I hear 5 or so songs from the album. Luckily I wasn't one bit disappointed. This album could also be described as "free jazz", but a bit more manic and a bit more proggy, like King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man. I just recently got this, but it'll probably be in my top 15 or so of this year.
Iran- Iran This album, I'd describe as "noise pop." The underlying songwriting in here is a bit reminiscent of something Lou Barlow would write, but it's presented in a noisier, messier and more lo-fi way.
Expiremental Audio Research- Millennium Music I've really come to love this cd. It features Kevin Shields, but it's very different from his stuff. It contains three long winded songs (all over 17 minutes.) It drones sometimes, but random electronic elements and live drumming really keep it interesting. Occasionally, especially in the middle of the second song, it gets pretty frantic. This stuff kinda reminds me of that new Wzt Hearts cd at times, but it's much spacier and crazier.
Looks like I have some searchin to do. Yay for good, well explained recommendations!
When are you startin a blog, kid? Or something.. last.fm? I need to keep tabs on your listenin' because you always seem to get to things way before I do.

I hope this helps...
Otomo Yoshihide - avant-garde turntablist, among other things. "Night of the Sampling Virus" is an interesting spoken word adventure so far, although I haven't listened to it thoroughly yet.
Acid Mothers Temple play on the stoner, psych end of the spectrum. If you've already given them a spin, my bad. They've released tons of stuff under a couple different variations on the Acid Mothers Temple & the .... theme. I like " Starless and Bible Black Sabbath and SWR.
Polysics are spazz-pop with some definite Devo inclinations. Very fun. I dig Polysics or Die, should hunt for some more of their stuff.
Hanatarash is a Yamatsuka EyE project started before the Boredoms. It's a bit harsher than the Boredoms.
Ghost - I have and love Hypnotic Underworld. free jazz, skin curling atonal worlds of smoke and shadows for the first four tracks (which are titled as a set), and then it breaks out into glorious, Dungen-esque psych. Some people swear by their earlier albums which I have yet to get into.
EDIT: oh! and Boris!
btw which boredoms albums have you been listening to?
