Words are failing me in describing this record but I would recommend it highly.

Just got this in the mail from DoA!

I hope I like it as much as you..

EDIT: After first listen all I can say is..

wow. Lately I've been complaining about folk music because it's lost all of it's charm it seems, but this album is wonderful. It is extremely engaging and driven, very hodge-podge but focused, AND it is has a sense of humor about it ("My name is David and I want an accordion solo!"). Fucking wonderful.

Glad to hear you enjoy the album Jackson. You're right on about their "hodge-podge" sound. These guys are fearless and seem apt to try any kind of production, be it lo-fi guitar fuzz or crystal clear vocal harmony.

Side note: a quick blog search yielded some juicy live renditions of "Ponta" "Take Me From Diamond Head" and "Good County Folk" (link is below). I was surprised at how easily the songs are reproduced in a live format. None of the gorgeous vocal overdubs, but really nice stuff anyway. You can download the live songs from the blog.

I've been playing the Woods cd debut "At Rear House" for months now, and Grampall Jookabox strikes me as a more playful, adventurous version of that excellent record.

The live versions are really good too.. which is surprising because I didn't think these would still sound nearly as interesting live as they do on the record.

I'm really surprised.. some really refreshing albums have come out this year.

Well well, that makes two Metacritic members now at DOA besides me. Welcome Jglass. I am actually writing for Tinymixtapes now too, kind of interesting. Look for an email from me in about a month when I will have all of the writers send me their top ten lists so I can compile them for the site's overall list.

I posted a review on my blog (and submitted it to DoA) of the Grampall Jookabox album, Scientific Cricket; I also included the link to the live tracks and thanked you, CouldBAnyone, for finding them. Big Grin

I think that Supersilent's 8 is starting to grow on me after an initially austere couple of listens. Anyone else listening to this?

I've been rockin' some new Hair Police stuff lately. Just ordered a copy of their new one-sided LP Blind Kingdom. It's definitely the most psychedelic and one of the best Hair Police records I've ever heard, even if it is only 15 minutes long. The Empty Quarter full-length is great too.

Just heard Black Dice's Load Blown. Its pretty solid. It has all been released before in various forms though. Does that mean it is unavailable for year end lists? Just curious. Great stuff.

(Yellow Swans' new album is steadily climbing my year end list. So great!)

I think the Black Dice record qualifies for year end lists as a new release although some of it was previously available. I tried to buy a copy of it on vinyl only to find that you have to purchase all of the 12" singles and that they aren't releasing the whole thing together on LP.

I'm with you Sicnarf, Yellow Swans are on a roll this year. You should check out their new tape, Drowner Yellow Swans. It falls in line with the new one on Load. Excellent stuff, kind of like a very loud Cocteau Twins with no vocals or percussion or maybe Phillip Jeck.

recently acquired some new albums, still digesting them.. will post more thoughts later.

triclops! - cafeteria brutalia (this is my favorite of the bunch so far.. also probably the most straighforward. math rock rhythym with plenty of noise)

mammal - lonesome drifter (fucking intense! i don't think i've really heard anything like it.)

supersilent - 8

harvey milk - my love is higher than your assessment of what my love could be

Just received the final interview questions with Stephen from Aufgehoben. I'm going to try and have the interview ready to run next week on DOA but I'll post here and let you guys know when it runs since I'm aware that we have some fans here besides myself.

Does anyone have feedback on that new Mammal album? I have heard a few snippets and am interested if anyone has heard the whole album.

I haven't seen anyone talking Robert Wyatt's Comicopera round these parts yet. I'm listening to it for the first time now. It's breathtaking - not abrasive in the noise sense, but mind-bending nonetheless. It's also got a Metascore of 86. Not too shabby.
