Ok, so I finally listened to Person Pitch today. Wow. Let me say it again: wow. The vocal harmonies are gorgeous, tight, and definitely the focus of the record. In fact, most of the tracks rely on a drone with skittering percussion as the only backing. Absolutely incredible. I've had "Bros" stuck in my head for several hours now and...yes...I think I will go listen again.

Ok, so sorry for the double post but I don't want to see my favorite thread on this forum die due to inactivity...

Anyways, just to let you know about some new avante-garde coming down the pike...

Axolotl has a new record called Telesma. Having never heard Axolotl before, and going off a pretty glowing review on Dusted, I decided to download and listen.

This album is fantastic! Axolotl comes from a more cerebral side of the noise spectrum. His distortion is centered around droning tones, with squeeks and distorted chirps decorating and adding texture to the tracks. If I were forced to classify the album, it would fall somewhere between the distorted ambient of Tim Hecker and more noisy drone artists like Mike Shiftlet or Double Leopards. Highly recommended.

I've heard of Axolotl before and sure i have heard samples but have let them slip through the cracks. I'll have to check this one out.

PS - Seeing Man Man tonight and then Daughters and The Locust back to back with Lightning Bolt! It will be a good week (starting today) for live shows.

I should be around the record store soon. I haven't listened to anything new for awhile. I did however get Geoff Mullen's Air in Pieces awhile ago and have just got to listening to it seriously. Truly wonderful.

I'm pretty jealous Sicnarf, hope you have a blast at the show. I've really wanted to see Lightning Bolt live for the past couple years but they haven't stopped by at all.

Also, though I hate to just keep throwing names out there, I have to mention another great release. Beautumn has a new album Northing with a limited edition bonus disk. His newest departs a little from White Coffee in that it adds more pronounced electronic drums. One thing I love about the record is its heavy use of naturalized found sounds (dripping rain, windy tape hiss etc..) with beautiful (ahh, the name makes sense) melodic dronescapes. The bonus disc features a 56 minute indulgence off the shorter 6 minute LP track "Blanket Short" and is an amazingly trance-inducing atmospheric soundscape. Definitely check this out if you are an ambient fan.

Recently got Prurient's Black Vase after Lightning Bolt played the most amazing show I have seen all year (Still waiting for Animal Collective and Gang Gang Dance to try and show them up). Anyway, about Prurient: I still need to give it more of a chance but I'm not to in to it as of yet.

Anyone listened to Mindflayer that has an opinion on the band?

Thanks for the props Sicnarf. Animal Collective is coming to Knoxville in May so I'll be catching them then. I'm trying to get them to play a pre-show at the record store where I work. We'll see how that turns out. Don't know if this is necessarily appropriate here but anyone else heard the new Bjork single yet? I'm a huge fan and I just downloaded it. I'm a little disappointed but I'm going to wait and see how the album turns out. With Chris Corsano and Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt playing on it I don't see how it could be bad. The first single, "Earth Intruders" is not the cat's meow that I was expecting though.

Black Vase is one of my favorite Prurient records, however "Roman Shower" is one of the most excruciating noise tracks I've ever heard. Get past that nail-gratingly minimal opener and you have a really rewarding album.

JB - I'm hoping for good things from the Bjork album. I heard someone talking to Chippendale about it at the Lighting Bolt show and he seemed pretty in aw of the whole experience. I'm interested to see how she works his drums in. I haven't heard the new track yet though. Maybe its a grower. You weren't a big fan of the new Panda Bear (which I still haven't listned to in full) at first either. Heres to hoping it will suprise us.

CouldBAnyone - Yeah that first Prurient track is absolutely grating. I think I am liking it more now that I have tried to erase my memory of that track.

nice to see that the usual crowd are keeping the topic alive.. haven't been listening to a lot of noise/avant-garde lately, been really busy with post-punk releases and electronica. Recently checked out Axolotl's myspace and loved what I heard. Couldn't find his newest release on psych-o-path's site so im currently trying to purchase it from a record store in the UK (which is going to end up costing me a lot of fucking money).. also trying to get Raccoo-oo-oon release as well.
Anybody have a good site where they purchase their music? or do you typically buy it off the label sites? I wish this stuff was more accessible..

how about Tarentel?

i didn't read all 13 pages of this thread yet, but I did a search and looks like no one's mentioned them yet. Their older stuff is a lot more straight forward, but for the last few years they've been getting more and more abstract. I haven't heard their newest releases (Ghetto Beats On The Surface of the Sun Vol. 1 through 4) though because they're only on vinyl. All I gots is one song.

They're really fun to see live too as they project films during their shows that add an extra dimension to their sounds. they put out a "live" cd last year that could have been better if it included video to go along with it, but alas they did not.

I'll definitely be interested in seeing where Bjork takes this record. She hasn't let me down once yet so I'm going to wait until I hear the entire thing to pass judgement.

As for that Prurient track, I love "Roman Shower." When I saw him in 2005 it was the only thing he played. It was pretty astounding live. People were holding their ears and walking out. These were people who came to see Wolf Eyes, how crazy is that?

Is Eluvium's Copia avant-garde or downright classical? Its not entirely organic right? I mean, I think a lot of the textures sound synthetic.

Copia is definately more classically oriented than Talk Amongst the Trees. I would label it his least experimental record yet. That said, I still love it quite a bit but stand by 2005's TAtT as his definitive statement. I like the direction though.

A lot of it does sound synthetic. Thats the singular qualm I have with the record. If he is going to employ orchestration I want real strings!

There aren't a lot of great places to find Raccoo-oo-oon. Keep checking with ebay.

I have been getting into a couple experimental electronica albums. Look these up and tell me what you alls think:
Ben Frost - Theory of Machines
Mark Templeton - Standing on a Hummingbird

also also - has anyone heard the new xbxrx or have any interest in it?

I always notice then when I'm looking at Temporary Residence records but have never given them a try. I'll report back.

sicnarf, i checked out ben frost.. really really impressed with that album. its on my 'to buy' list. wasn't blown away by your other suggestion but i plan on going back to it.

i recently acquired 'jealous of shit and shine' by shit and shine which is a great noise-rock cd. i'd liken them to lightning bolt but they're different. i havent seen any mentions of the new stars of the lid album on the board.. falls into the ambient-drone area of avant-garde. just got the cd today but the first spin was great. also got a couple of the cd's off of the noise anthology (can be found on demonoid).. plenty of interesting tracks. can we label the first couple royal trux albums as noise? to much rock? also got my hands on playthroughs.. first time i heard keith f w and im very impressed. he put me in a great headspace. recommended to all

Shit and Shine sound like an interesting combo (you know I love shit!). I'll have to check them out.

I love Stars of the Lid and this newest one did not dissapoint whatsoever. Heavy rotation in the more *ahem* "altered" times of my day. Gewd stuff.

Not certain if it fits in this category, but ahve any of you guys heard Efterklang? I've just listened to their relase from this year, Under Giant Trees as well as their 2004 full-length Tripper. It's good stuff. Sort of an other-wordly feel to their albums. Lots of odd noises and when they use vocals they're pushed pretty far back in the mix. It's got some post-rock elements at times, but I definitely wouldn't call them a post-rock band.

Here's a link to an MP3 of a song from Under Giant Trees. It's called "Jojo." Got the link from the excellent Raven Sings the Blues blog, found at http://ravensingstheblues.blogspot.com

I have to admit that song is pretty cool, but I'm not sure how anybody could release an entire album in a similar vein. Even so, thanks for sharing, RL. Cool

I don't normally try to pimp out my work at Delusions of Adequacy (www.adequacy.net) here but I have a new column that might be of interest to the readers of this particular thread. It's called Small Wonders and I review only tape, CD-R, and 7" releases in it. The first one is up now. In it I cover releases from Wolf Eyes, Hair Police, Aufgehoben, and Benoit Pioulard. Also if any of you all are in bands with releases on these formats or know of any newer releases like that, please let me know. I definitely want to continue the column at a regular rate and I'm trying to find as much stuff to cover as possible. I don't want it to end up being all noise, although I do like that stuff as most of you know.
