I like really dark, distorted/fuzzy psychedelic indie rock. Bonus points if they have songs that build up to a cathartic explosion of noise and strobe lights and brain melting goodness. Thinking of stuff like Black Mountain, The Raveonettes, Deerhunter, Duke Spirit...yes yes? Any new(ish) bands that have this sound?

Thanks!

PS:…But not A Place to Bury Strangers. That’s too much for me.

Dark, distorted, psychedelic, fuzzy. Songs have cathartic climaxes. Songs that include STROBE LIGHTS. WELL. How many of those bases can I cover? Try these:

The Legends, The Drones, Crystal Antlers, Crystal Stilts, Comets on Fire, Grandaddy, the Joggers, Olivia Tremor Control, Serena Maneesh, Swervedriver, Mercury Rev

Noisier/more difficult (and potentially rewarding) options include Polvo, the Grifters and Iran

All good ones, if your going to do Mercury Rev though, stick with the first two albums, which are badass. Their other shit is more dream pop than anything. Iran is also a good catch too, though they may be more challenging than you would like (their new stuff is pretty far removed from that though, it's nowhere near lo-fi anymore).

I could add more, but you'll be good with those, maybe go for some Sleater-Kinney, especially the Woods.

I'd add Dead Meadow, Dungen, The Brian Jonestown Massacre(ignore their latest), The Manhattan Love Suicides, Boris (particularly their album with Michio Kurihara), Wooden Shjips, the Black Angels, Spiritualized and Spacemen 3.

How could I forget the Twilight Sad...

2nd Black Gravel's Serena Maneesh mention. Man, I wish they'd release a new album already. I love their s/t last one.

Nice call on Sleater-Kinney, The Woods totally rocks and is just what I was looking for. Also, I loved the Black Angels recommendation nmeilborg, that's also right up my alley. I love fuzzy, droning stuff like that. Thanks, and keep them coming!

All The Saints - Fire on Corridor X

it's an amazing album, highly underrated. They were on the same label as A Place to Bury Strangers, but not as noisy. They actually just signed to Touch & Go recently.

Get Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You, the song "Terminus" is exactly like that. The whole album is a masterpiece.
Also get The Microphones - The Glow, Pt. 2, it's reasonably dark, has a lot of noisier parts, excellent dynamics, subtle melodies and is probably the most "human" album ever made.
If you are looking for something more extreme, pick up Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain, the most badass and heaviest noise rock album ever. The thing that separates it from a lot of other noise albums is that it actually has incredible MELODIES.

I'll chime in with an oldie but a goodie: Come. Bluesy rather than psychedelic, but they definitely fit the dark and cathartic description. Sadly, the band has been all but forgotten, but these were beautiful and eerie songs with tremendous power and stunning climaxes. For starters, try 1996's "Near Life Experience." This goes along nicely with Black Gravel's Grifters suggestion.

It's not like there's a topic about this in the very same forum, stickied at the top.

Oh wait! What do you know, there is.

Cuneyt81, thanks for the All the Saints suggestion - I never would have known this band existed!

Jamieg - Wow, Come is really good. Not exactly what I was looking for, but I will be putting them on my list.

Away in a Chamber - Thank you for pointing out the post at the top of the forum. I actually did notice it, but decided that I would tap the collective since I am looking for a specific kind of indie rock. And it's been working, I've been getting fantastic suggestions. Do you have any?

Hmmm... I'm not much of a connoisseur of the fuzzy stuff, but I've been enjoying Deerhunter's Microcastle.

If you want more straightforward rock like the Duke Spirit, try the Exploding Hearts?

Sure thing!

I'd also echo CheesyP00f's suggestion of Unwound. That album's one of the best of this decade.

I third the rec of Unwound. If you like Leaves Turn Inside You, definitely check out their early stuff like Fake Train or Repetition. It's a bit harsher - totally fugazi/nirvana/sonic youth-esque Kill Rock Stars stuff.
