I like the mod's smiley face sponsorship of petty, clumsy, unfunny, and blatant flaming of me (especially after having banned me for fighting back).
It's meant to be sly or somewhat covert, but it's pretty obvious to anyone with a mind. There are members who come into any thread I make or respond to, and throw in totally inane little comments that they probably think brilliantly undermine my credibility. They make sure that they appeal to the "us against him" mentality AND are in line with the prevailing opinion, because they are cowards who cannot stand alone.

I'm not aware of all the back history here, but you seem to be the one who thinks everyone who doesn't agree with you is wrong. Right?

Wow Black Gravel is far and away the most defensive individual on these forums, by far. I mean seriously dude, every response you give to people's kind-of shrug shoulders responses to your elitest, adulatory statements about this or that has-been band, like the Wrens for example, is just seething with discomfort and distrust. But to stay on topic, Stay Positive is brilliant, I mean judged on its own terms I would call it a masterpiece. This album even seems to have a 4-part structure. Just amazing, and the fact that it's(I feel) the most personal of their albums just makes it all the more great.
I honestly kinda like BlackGravel... sometimes, when i agree with him. That's all I'll say on that.
But this new one by The Hold Steady, HOT DAMN!!! It's about time i got genuinely excited about a straight-forward rock album. The instrumentation has moved into very interesting directions while maintaining the bands integrity as the kind of go-to band for drunk anthems. Good band, terrible, horrible, heinous record label.

Even with songs like "Citrus," "You Can Make Him Like You," and "Chillout Tent"?
Whoa. "Chillout Tent" is probably my favorite HS song. (I even have a bumper sticker that says "oranges and cigarettes"). I looooove that song.
Actually, I love all three of those songs. You must have been stretching to find a sub-par song on the album. But, I would suggest "South Town Girls" as a less-than-fantastic song from the album.
And, it's pointless to rank The Hold Steady's albums. They're all great. Boys and Girls in America has more mainstream appeal, but it doesn't make it better. In fact, the more "mainstream" sound is why some people like it less than Separation Sunday or Almost Killed Me.
My vote for favorite song, if anybody cares, is "Cattle and the Creeping Things". It encapsulates the tension between religion and drug culture which makes so many of their songs great.

Just wait til you see what we've got in store for the June issue!
Seriously though, I do like you BG. It's just that, for someone who spends all their time on here trying to offend others, you are hilariously easy to bait yourself. And that's not a very endearing quality.
Back on topic, this album isn't blowing me away so far, at least not to the extent that their last two did. The more accessible sound doesn't always work for them.
Also Troy, I'm with you. Cattle and the Creeping Things is the cream of the crop.

One more for "Cattle and the Creeping Things" as their best song.

I'm going to be creative and say my favorite song of theirs is "Your Litter Hoodrat Friend".
That song makes me want to chain-smoke with a bottle of whiskey all night long until i wake up on a park bench naked with a hobo gently nestling my testicles.

I'm only ever hostile and excitable when people are talking about the things I value, not talking about me.
Brighteyes215, your name is brighteyes215. The Wrens are a "has-been" band, huh. Why are some people so proud of being stupid?
The Stay Positive I've found has terrible sound quality. I kind of felt the same way about Boys and Girls at first. It may be deliberate, or it may be a bad version.

I love your hubris, BG. It's a select few who dare to bait the forum populus with a statement like "The only reason to say you like either of the previous Hold Steady albums better than Boys and Girls is that you don't quite listen to music correctly," and then play the victim card when someone responds with a witty retort.
For future reference, here in "teh internets", when you make ridiculous, hyperbolic statements, you can pretty much expect people to mock you. And you won't get much sympathy when you cry foul afterward.

I still can't speak on topic, because I haven't heard the new album yet.
But since this is sortof an open forum about The hold Steady now, I will point out that thanks to this thread and my anticipation of the new album, I've been listening to a lot of Hold Steady.
I "discovered" the songs "Banging Camp" and "Multitude of Casualties" yesterday. I say "discovered" because I've heard them so many times before and never really gave them a second thought, but suddenly I don't want to listen to anything else. I think it's because they are perfect for driving in the summer with sunglasses on.

We've had a thread for The Hold Steady for almost three years now, here. A lot of great members have made valuable comments over there.
Seriously dude. You know how lame it would be to stop a conversation in one thread and move it to another one everytime the subject changes slightly. This forum has maybe three conversations going a day, I'm working in the interest of the board in making comments to keep them going.
Here. I'll even try to stay on topic with this comment.
I'm curious, how long is the new album in total length?

Duration : 43:53.977 (116158405 samples)
Throughout that period of time (43:53.977) I don't think the album really made me feel anything. While Boys & Girls In America made me jam-out, Seperation Sunday revolted me (I still can never listen to that album; it's trash), and Almost Killed Me made me introspective (esp. with all the references to my hometown), Stay Positive has yet to really make me like or dislike it. It's just.... "meh" at this point.
