I just recently fell in love all over again with the Constantines' "Soon Enough." I'll admit that I didn't listen to Tournament of Hearts enough when it came out, but I'm going to remedy that situation ASAP.

I put Tournament of Hearts on my top 20 in '05. It's been awhile since I listened to it, but I did like it at the time. "You Are A Conductor" is a great tune.

Yeah man do that. For some reason it took me awhile to get into "Tournament of Hearts". I don't really know why, it's so full of melody. "Draw us Lines" feels like an uprising. Who else but Bryan Webb writes songs about eco-spiritualist activists? I love every song, but that one "You are a conductor", "Hotline Operator", "Litzveta", and "Soon Enough" are my favorites. I started listening to the Constantines after seeing them live as an opening act. It was an arena show for the Foo Fighters that my friend dragged me to (They're good, but I'm not a huge fan). When they played "On to You", and everything goes quiet except for Webb's gentle cooing, the whole arena seemed frozen. It's abnormal for me to get that from a band I haven't heard before. All their albums are great. I always go see them when they come to Winnipeg, a measly $10 ticket for a world class show.

CoCoCo Well, you guys have convinced me to check out The Constantines. I'll let you know what I think.
Yeah man, I wanna know good or bad what you think. They just seem too good to be so off the musical radar. Probably just my opinion. Their first album is more of a straight up rock record than their others. Bryan Webb is a great poetic lyricist and he never sounds contrived or elitist.

hm.. technically you are right, Britt Daniel (and I assume the rest of the band) now reside in Portland. However, they were established and are most strongly associated with the Austin music scene. Just thought I would be a dick and point that out.
Also, The Dandy Warhols.

I could easily list Detroit and then 5 out of the 6 White Stripes albums, but I'll do some other ones...
Montréal: (my favorite city for music right now) Malajube - Trompe l'Oeil Arcade Fire - Neon Bible Islands - Return To The Sea The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
New York City: Animal Collective - Feels Grizzly Bear - Yellow House Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell Liars - Drum's Not Dead The Forms - Icarus
White Stripes - "Get Behind Me Satan" White Stripes - "Icky Thump" White Stripes - "Elephant" White Stripes - "White Blood Cells" hmmm.... the hard part.... I guess.... White Stripes - self-titled
honorable mention to a Detroit band called The White Stripes for their fantastic album "De Stijl".
Damn that was easy....except for the last pick that was really hard....thanks for the idea stereo

No problem. I actually would have chosen all of them except Get Behind Me Satan.

Yeah that doesn't surprise me that much, as that seems to be a consensus among many WS fans. However "Get Behind Me Satan" is my favorite 'Stripes record. All my favorite albums are when a, generally highly regarded artist, makes such a formidable artistic statement that the music world is left in disbelief. Maybe that's a stretch, and of course, shock value doesn't make a great album, the songs do. Still, GBMS is the White Stripes at their most plaintive and epic, and to me, most interesting. Many of the songs on it are my favorite of their songs. Brilliant songcraft like "Forever for Her" and the simple but prfect "I'm Lonely(but ain't that lonely yet)" never fail hook me. A stream of consciouness piano ballad, a cryptic marimba tune with malicious overtones, a giddy bluegrass song about a ghost, the infectious pop hits, the two sonic rock songs(Blue Orchid and Red Rain - Instinct Blues is a bit weak), it's all so engrossing to me. The White Stripes are a band where each one of their albums has been my fav by them at one point in time, but GBMS is their most interesting. Even the title is so epic, ripping off Jesus Christ. This is probably a pointless rant but when it comes to a great album I can't stop. It's a counter-cultural punk rock(in theory) artistic stamp of an album. Those are usually my favorites. Other examples.... Radiohead - "Kid A" Nirvana - "In Utero" John Lennon - "Plastic Ono Band" Velvet Underground and Nico - debut Pink Floyd - The Wall The Pixies - Surfer Rosa Beatles - White Album Neil Young - Tonight's the Night Tom Waits - Rain Dogs Bob Dylan - Highway 61
I find an unyielding power in these albums plus many more I'm sure....this has nothing to do with the topic but....does anyone else have any examples of rocks great artistic statements?

I'm listening to it again now, and I like it much better than I used to. It is a lot more diverse and much less downtempo than I remember it being. It is still one of my two least favorites, around the same area as Icky Thump, but that's still pretty good...because that's my #1 album of this year. All of The White Stripes' albums are great and there are 4 of them in my top 10 favorite albums.
