The label 'experimental' is (or used to be) a little different. I think that one did make sense for quite a while. When people (critics and musicians alike) talk about 20th century academic 'experimental' music, I believe they do make it sound like a test - one that was a big fat failure to many less adventurous ears.

But now that the ...what - form, genre? has matured a bit it seems that that label experimental gets less and less appropriate. Now there's a definite subculture that has already decided that they like the results and want to do more testing. But now that so much has already been done for the first time it seems more like product development (all bogus business connotations aside) rather than honest to goodness experimentation. Maybe this is another discussion that could migrate to the avant garde thread?

I definitely agree with your conception of the "experimental" side of contemporary music vitunkrapula. How long has it been since you've heard a sound that really surprised you? I still listen to ye olde Nurse With Wound classics just to get a bit of fresh ground sounds. Sure I love distortion, sine waves, clicking percussion, and chime synths but in terms of sonic exploration even the so-called avant-garde retreads and retreads and retreads. Of course I love "October Language" for the very reason that it sounds like the best Fennesz/Tim Hecker track played at varying chord changes for 45 minutes, so maybe I'm just expelling hot air here.

Hey buddy, your 'question' is pretty subjective, so even if I were to say that I think Oasis is indie, which I don't, it isn't going to be 100% valid for everybody. Oasis is or was signed to Sony, and considering the normal definition of "Indie" they don't fit the category. Thing is, most of the artists you mentioned were around before "Indie" actually meant anything.

It really depends how you're using the term "indie". Are you using it as a genre definition or in reference to the size of the label they're on?

Here's how I'd classify them.

Ritter, Newsom = Indie Folk
Joy Division, New Order, Echo = Post-Punk/New Wave
Oasis, The Verve = Brit Rock
VU = Protopunk, Art Rock
Goldfrapp = Electropop
Wrens = Indie Rock
