I personally like Britpop. I agree with my fellow Coloradoan Juanboy thinking the Beatles were the best. But of those four on the list, my personal favorite band on there is Pulp. That said, I think the Smiths best any of those and I think The Undertones(especially their first) probably best the Smiths.

Well, PRG, you and a few others here may know that the Undertones and Smiths were both my favorite bands at the times they were peaking, and I was lucky enough to seem them both twice in concert during their respective heydays. Cool

Yes a limited list but given those choices it wouldn't be pulp dispite how much of a genius j.cocker is.
It wouldn't be blur despite how amazing of a guitarist coxon is.

Which leaves the stone roses and suede, suede have the back catolgue but the stone roses have quality over quantity.

It's a close call but I'd settle on the stone roses. They gel better as a band and his voice doesn't get annoying half as quickly. The harsh views on the second coming were harsh, it reeks of a music industry consipacy i.e kill stoner britpop.

Would you like lies with that?

The Manic Street Preachers for the 50 odd minutes that is The Holy Bible. Everything else by them is a huge let down after that moment of inspiration.

I liked Suede the best... out of that set, but I have to say I hate most modern "genres" I dont mean I hate the music, just the way they are labelled... it gets tiresome. There's some genre being bigged up in the UK at the moment called "New Rave"... whats next...?

Rhino put out an outstanding box set last year called, The Brit Box: UK Indie, Shoegaze, and Brit-Pop Gems of the Last Millennium, which is really quite exceptional. One of the bands NOT featured on the box and not mentioned in this thread is the Housemartins. Although their heyday was quite a bit before the Brit-Pop explosion of the mid-90s, they should be included in any serious discussion of the genre. I'm not sure how they got left off the Rhino comp [scratches head].
