In the new AVClub, in an interview with Colin Meloy, the Decemberists, the Shins, Arcade Fire and Death Cab are referred to as "yindie" bands.
This is the first time I've heard the term, and it clearly sounds contemptuous. Yindie is to indie as VH1 is to MTV? As Starbucks is to your local coffee dive? As the Gap is to Urban Outfitters?

What other bands are "yindie." Does "yindie" suck?

I'm afraid that I'm yindie!

Yindie = indie for yuppies.

It is related, but not necessarily synonymous with "dindie" (dad indie, i.e Wilco)

Don't fret. It's just prentious BS. All of those bands have proven themselves to be heavyweights in the music world, and have risen to the top thanks to select media outlets (*cough* p4k and the OC).

They put out good music even if they aren't indie anymore (they aren't).

I don't know too...I thought that the "Y" is for "young". Yindie could be indie music made by young artists.....

Key phrase: "Still putting out good music". The Arcade Fire is soooo 2 years ago. Duh.

OHHH! Heyo!

Haha, I love being opinionated.

Naw, it's definitely yuppie indie. Volvo driving, Starbucks quaffing, Gap purchasing indie types.

I'm more worried about the mindie or dindie label, for mom indie and dad indie. Cuz I'm totally an indie dad. Christmas presents for the kids: albums by the Knife, the Thermals, the Dears and Islands!

Rewards for good grades? Concert tickets to TVOTR, the Decemberists and the Flaming Lips!

I was being slightly sarcastic in my reference of Wilco as "dindie" considering "dad indie" is commonly known as independent music that is rather boring and accessible and therefore appropriate for the uncool musical tastes of father. This was all tongue in cheek though, I really enjoy Wilco.

I've decided in the interest of hopelessly imbecilic musical labeling to go ahead and copyright these now while the getting is good:

Findie (Finland indie)
Shindie (shit indie, i.e. Bloc Party..ooooo burn)
Windie (Indie featuring woodwinds and/or indie from Chicago)
Cringie (overly emotive indie with bad lyrics, see: Bright Eyes, Kind Of Like Spitting)
NMCindie (needs more cowbell indie, i.e. Rapture....and...uhm, oh that's right we all tried to forget dancepunk was around huh)

I'm still very confused by this post...

If he's being an asshole, I don't understand why.

If he's not being an asshole, I'd like to know what this is in regards to (well, I guess I'd like to know that either way).

Oh well. I guess I'll never know unless someone can clear it up... I feel like he's trying to say I'm a pretentious music snob, but I don't understand why he'd post that here instead of in one of the areas where I come off as a pretentious indie snob.

EDIT: I think it was in regards to my Arcade Fire comment... which although I kind of agree with what I said (I'm hoping they make another album I will like) I was still just screwin around.

glassb0arder, I thought you were kidding. I actually thought you were parodying indie music snobs who hate just because everyone else likes it.

Apropos Arcade Fire, I really like Neon Bible (which, by now, has to be the Yindie album of the year, what with charting on Billboard, etc) but it probably mostly made me appreciate how good Funeral was.

Pitchfindie: Band hyped into success by Pitchfork.
