in my opinion , "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer" is a better album than "Neon Bible" .the variety of sounds and styles , the production , the lyrics make that album almost a masterpiece."Neon Bible" is close but sounds more linear.
from the other hand in the list with my favourite albums of the year so far , you 'll see "Neon Bible" higher (#2) than "Hissing Fauna..." (#3)!
i suppose that it has to do with my personal music taste.maybe its not so objective but that s how it works for me.

I'm not trying to deprecate Hissing Fauna (I'd place it at a close second), I liked Arcade Fire's NB more because I liked how it kept the same kind of theme throughout the album. Also, "Black Mirror" is a spectacular opening song. I like "Suffer For Fashion", but it doesn't introduce the album as well, in my opinion. Two great albums, though. Big Grin

I have grown to appreciate Neon Bible on a song by song basis. I can listen to "No Cars Go" or "Intervention" and enjoy it, but I can't listen to the whole album. I just don't like 40 minutes of that same dark, fuzzy aesthetic. Funeral is on a whole other playing field, for me.

I think Hissing Fauna is able to trump Neon Bible on its songwriting chops alone. Incredible.

It's evil... Red Face
I like the vaguely sinister feel of NB. Now isn't that strange?

Sinister, you've got to hear the darkness, bitterness, and anger running through Hissing Fauna.... Its much more "sinister" than the Arcade Fire album. Aside from that, the songwriting, both lyrically and musically easily trump Neon Bible. I'm not saying its not a good album, it is. They're just on different levels to my ears.

I'm going to say that they're both pretty dark records. Neon Bible comments on the sad state of the world (every spark of friendship and love will die without a home, for example) while Hissing Fauna chronicles more the bitterness and lashing out of a man who's been completely destroyed by that which he loved.

Arcade Fire's sinister feel is more direct, while Hissing Fauna is more a venting through more cheerful music (however bitter the words may be). I also like the Arcade Fire's embrace of archaic instruments.

This is not really true. You really need to hear some of the harmonies, the dissonance in some of the chords, the harsh clash that some of the vocal layerings do and some of the clustering that is all over Hissing Fauna... I know that some people note how Neon Bible sounds so much like "dark" Arcade Fire but in reality it is just a different sound.

You might think that Of Montreal's album sounds "cheerful" but a lot of the sounds, variances, dynamics, tones and even keys that are used fit the lyrical content well.

On second thought (and a more attentive listen) I noticed the dissonance. What I do a lot is use music as ambience, and all I hear then are the sweet pop licks. But I still like NB better Razzer

Thanks FKA, thats the best description of what I've never been able to accurately put into words about this album.

I've been loading my iTunes library with my old Of Montreal stuff. Has anyone ever noticed the discrepancy on The Gay Parade tracklisting? The CD liner notes, iTunes, and All Music Guide are all wrong.

On the liner notes there appears to be a song titled, "Y the Quale and Vaguely Bird Noisily Enjoying Their Forbidden Tryst." Which is assigned to track # 8, which is clearly "I'd Be a Yellow Feathered Loon" (it's the first line of track #8). The rest of the tracks are similarly one-off. I double checked with Of Montreal's website, and according to their track listing, there is no song titled "Y the Quale . . ." on the album. Weird.

I hope this has not been discussed before on here, because it was a chore to write down! If it has, do be a dear, and don't point it out to me.

np: "Autobiographical Grandpa"

The albums were a mess - a lot of the Japanese releases had one or two extra songs, and in different countries there were sometimes different or extra songs. It made such a mess that Barnes had to release a big album of extras from the Japanese and other foreign releases from the albums.

And you have to admit that that song does sound like an Of Montreal track Smiler.

Re: Hissing Fauna, it's still one of my top albums of the year, and, if you care, I do seem to be coming out of some funk regarding 2007 music, but I want to ask those who have heard the The a question. Doesn't the new Of Montreal remind you A LOT of Matt Johnson and '80s The The? I'm asking because I've been listening to my vinyl copies of Soul Mining, Infected and Mind Bomb this week.

I'd even say that the The's inspiration can be found in the new LCD Soundsystem.

The The is good enough to be better than this year's Of Montreal and LCD Soundsystem. Maybe we should be allowed to add old albums which remind us of this year's.

I guess I could answer for Mark... He actually recommended me my first The The album (Thanks Again, I'm now obsessed). Soul Mining would be the best starting place. However, Mind Bomb and Infected are also gems. Matt Johnson is a really phenomenal songwriter.
