yea, imo, this cd is great. it realy is. i was really suprised on how well they pulled it off.

and as someone said earlier it is better than the shins new release. wayyy better.

if you haven't heard it yet i highly suggest going out and getting it.

and thats coming from a used to be lukewarm of monteral fan.

C is my favorite note of the year so far. I could easily see it cracking my top five notes of the year, and it is only January!!!

I want to like this album but I'm just not getting it. The songs just don't seem to be gelling. I'll keep listening though. I want to figure it out.
I don't think I'll ever see it as topping The Shins new album though.

I'm in the same predicament, I think The Shins blows this album out of the water right now. I think even the new Menomena and Deerhoof albums are worlds above this one.

Not to say I won't start liking it more on a few more listens though, this is the first I have heard by Of Montreal, so I am willing to give it some time.

It's definitely good. It took a bit to grow on me, but now I adore it. I also loved Sunlandic Twins, too, and that one's a bit more accessible IMO.

Question, for anyone who wants to answer.

Note: I have heard some Of Montreal's work before this release, but once I read about Barnes' personal story on which HF is based off of, I then felt really compelled to listen to it.

Question(s): Now, did anyone else read what the album was about before their first listen? I ask, because I found that I immediately took to this album, and I'm wondering if that may have influenced my opinion of it.

Yeah i hear you. I did read up on it before I listened to it and yes, it did positively influence me. I think that each person reacts differently to it though. I didn't read up on The Shins newest; just listened to it, liked it a lot, bought it, listened to it more, then read up on it and now I like it just as much as the of Montreal album. I am sucker for guys writing about sour break-ups, I like the way they are able to convey their feelings into a great piece of music (i.e. the best album of 2002--Sea Change.) And I feel that that is felt here on this album as well, especialy on "The Past is a Grotesque Animal." Overall, if you like the story behind it and the music is really good then you will probably just melt for the album. Then again, everything I just said could be completely wrong.

By the way, if you guys like this album/this band, you owe it to yourself to check out one of their live shows. I couldn't get into them until I saw them live, and they blew me out of the water. Now I'm a huge fan. Smiler

satanic panic in the attic, perhaps?

and no the new one is DEF. not their best. honestly, guys..

Great thanks, I'm glad i'm not the only one. I completely agree with everything you said, even the part about liking the shins newest as much as HF. I myself, really can't decide which one I like better. I'm leaning towards Wincing just because I can see myself still listening to that album ten years from now.

Also, Dear_Catastrophe, care to explain why you think HF isn't their best?

This album isn't frontloaded at all. "She's a Rejecter" and the closer "We Were Born the Mutants Again with Leafing" are two of my favorites on the album.

i am the exact opposite. i really want to enjoy the shins cd but im having problems with that.

and i really love the OM release. really love it.

the 11 minute song, the past is a grotesque animal, is brilliant.

but i played it for this girl who really liked the shins new one and she didnt like it too much.

maybe the "wincing the night away" fans and the "hissing fauna" fans were never meant to be lumped together.

I like both of them, but prefer Of Montreal in a big way. To use the Pitchfork scale, I'd give OM a 9.0 and the Shins 7.9.

OK, so 'Faberge Falls For Shuggie' is actually a candidate for song of the year here in February. Maybe now that I am obsessed with one song, I will get into the rest of the album as well!

If you haven't done so already sk, I found their album 'Satanic Panic In The Attic' a really good place to start (well, it wouldn't technically be the first you'd heard)...it's probaly even more varied than 'Hissing Fauna...'. The track 'City Bird' for example is a beautiful folk song, which stands out alot from the other poppier songs. Not that I've heard much of it, but apparently 'Sunlandic Twins' is pretty average.

It's not their best, but Sunlandic Twins has some extremely good songs. "This Party's Crashing Us" and "Wraith Pinned to the Mist" are two of the best indie pop songs I've ever heard.
