I am trying to make a cd for a friend of mine with songs that contain counting. It is proving harder than I thought to find enough good indie-ish songs to fill it up. I really don't want to resort to Mambo no. 5 so please help me out!

So far I have:
Jane Fonda - Mickey Avalon
Don't Cry Out - Shiny Toy Guns
Barrel of a Gun - Guster
Invisible Ones Guard the Gate - Orenda Fink
1234 - Feist

Thanks!

Off the top of my head:

Most of these are older songs.

Pixies - "Monkey Gone To Heaven" (the whole "If man is 5" part)

The Modern Lovers - "Roadrunner" (nice countoff at the beginning -- "1,2,3,4,5,6")

Violent Femmes - "Kiss Off" ("I take 1,1,1 cause you left me and 2,2,2 for my family and...")

It's not really indie, but Dance by Justice has some counting.

"00:15:00" by Chomsky, also known as "Fifteen Minutes To Rock," sort of has counting in it.

"Senses Working Overtime" by XTC, while not exactly indie, is an 80's gem.

Loose Fur's "Thou Shalt Wilt" which paraphases the 10 commandments backwards in a countdown.

"Naked Woman, Naked Man
Where did you get that nice sun tan?"

Almost forgot one of the most asskicking counting songs in recent memory, "Hotel Yorba" by the White Stripes.

So far I added Hotel Yorba and I'm a Wheel.. I'm not a huge Wilco listener although I did catch them at ACL a couple of years ago and thought they were good. I'll have to give em another good listen. I can't believe I didn't think of Hotel Yorba myself. Thanks eric tho for the reimder because it is pretty "asskicking" as you say.

Thanks for all the other suggestions tho, just didn't really fit.

And if you think of any more keep 'em coming!

Try Tiger Army's cover of Eddie Cochran's "20 Flight Rock". I'd suggest the original, but that doesn't fit the indie part. This Psychobilly version is pretty cool. It's also only a minute and a half long, so you can easily squeeze it into your comp. I think it would sound sweet next to "Hotel Yorba".
