I'm new to the forum. I was hoping some people would be able to point me to some new indie bands that I might like based on some of my favorite bands, which are admittedly all over the place (see below). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
What I Listen To Most: Broken Social Scene (favorite band; if you don't like them, you haven't listened enough) The Shins (Wincing is quickly growning on me) Wolf Parade (Apologies is brilliant) The New Pornographers Sufjan Stevens American Analogue Set Citizen Cope Iron and Wine Destroyer (Rubies is fantastic) Animal Collective Snow Patrol The Decemberists The Arcade Fire Bright Eyes (I don't buy "our generations Dylan", but I like for the most part) Wilco Belle and Sebastian Of Montreal (just got into them; hissing fauna is money) Spoon CYHSY (loved their debut album. Saw them live. Didn't love them so much anymore) The Flaming Lips (never got into albums past Yoshemi and Soft Bulletin) Death Cab (I've been kinda over them lately, but still some good stuff) Postal Service (Oddly, even though i've grown tired of Deathcab, I can't wait for a new album)
I'm mostly looking for some gems that I haven't heard of w/ a similar feel to the bands that I listed. I mostly listen to indie folk/pop/electronica (at least according to amazon.com's categories).
I realize that it's kinda ambiguious to list a group of bands like I did. I guess I am hoping that people will share some of the same favorites as I do, and have other favorites that they'd recommend for me which I just haven't discovered yet.
Thanks in advance!
-Fritz

Did you only want recommedations in similar sound to what you listed or wanted some hip-hop/rap as well? And did you only want relatively recent artists or stuff from musical giants?

Thanks... I edited my post to be slightly less ambiguous. Definitely looking for relatively recent artists since I probably know most of the classics.
I appreciate the list. I am familiar w/ most of those bands, but there's a few on there that I don't know and will definitely check out (i.e. Andrew Bird, Anthony and the Johnsons, The National).

I second the National recommendation. Alligator is a classic. Also:
Elephant Micah J. Tillman
Both of these first two are folk/alt-country guys specializing in sad music sort of like Iron and Wine's first album. These are my two favorite artists right now.
Thee More Shallows
They're sort a dark indie electronic pop band if that makes sense. They're 2005 album, More Deep Cuts is one of my favorite albums ever.
The Notwist
If you like electronic-pop stuff, Neon Golden is as good as it gets. It's much more serious sounding than Postal Service. This is also one of my all-time favorite albums, and I'm yet to know anyone who's listened to it and not loved it.
I'll keep my list short and leave it there for now. If you want more recommendations, just ask.

If you like AC's more psych-folk stuff (a la Sung Tongs, Campfire Songs, and the Always You B-sides) then you might enjoy Akron/Family's self-titled debut. Their more recent effort Meek Warrior has some missteps but you might like it as well, also get their split with The Angels Of Light.

yeah, certainly something out of the ordinary...
Fritz, you should check out field music... they just came out with a stellar album (got an 86 on metacritic) and based on your list you would like them, looks like your fairly open to lots of different music

I recently discovered Dirty On Purpose, "Hallelujah Sirens" while browsing through PLUG Awards nominees, and downloaded their album off of eMusic. They remind me of a blend of Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, with somewhat My Bloody Valentine-ish vocals, maybe. Very nice, alternately quiet and rocking, extremely melodic...a thoroughly enjoyable record. Highly recommended.

I don't think I saw The Knife on the list. I would definitely check out their latest.
