Also for anyone with the physical copy... is there a CD booklet or anything?
I got the vinyl version for only $14 at Insound. It's supposed to come with both albums and a Deerhunter poster. Haven't received it yet so I can't comment on the packaging.

30 dollars?!? Maybe I'm spoiled being close to so many record stores, but I don't remember the last time I spent more than $15 dollars on a cd that wasn't either rare or a boxset. Anyways, I just picked up the album today for 13 American Dollars, which a currency calculator tells me is about 16 Canadian Dollars. Its about the same on Amazon and well worth it to get the Weird Era Cont. disc. It does have a booklet of some photos shaded in pastels like the cover, nothing spectacular but pleasant enough to look at and matches the music well enough.

Well that's enough to convince me to buy it. (In response to the answering questions about booklet/price.)
Maybe it's because I buy 95 percent of my records (I always buy physical, never digital) from record stores, as opposed to online, so the price may be greater in-store.

And FKA, 14 bucks for vinyl + bonus CD + poster? Sweet deal!

Finally got around to listening to Weird Era Cont. I'm liking it a lot. I'm a huge fan of the closing song.

Now, should we consider this as two seperate entities, a double album, or Weird Era Cont. as a bonus disc?

Well as far as I'm aware, it is a bonus disc, and it is not a double album. Either way, whatever, I mean it's just a technicality as far as I'm concerned, people can consider it however they want. Anyway, been looking everywhere for the album, can't find it anywhere, appears to not be out here yet, so still haven't heard Weird Era Cont :/

Yeah, I had a hard time finding it as well. None of the mainstream and independent retailers around here had it. I had to drive to Amoeba in Hollywood (the biggest indie record store here in Southern California) to get it.

It was so worth it though.

I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not to think of it as JUST a bonus disc because I actually enjoy it more than Microcastle. Weird Era was more of what I expected from them. It's dense and murky but still beautiful for the most part. Microcastle is great pop, but I enjoy the darker side of the band. If I consider both parts like it says on the packaging, Microcastle/Weird Era Cont., then it is a much stronger release than if taken individually. Top five of the year material for me.

I'm listening to Microcastle now and I'm liking it a lot. Haven't gotten into Weird Era yet...

But I think you have to consider it a double album, simply because the packaging and booklet both mention Weird Era and have the tracklisting. If it was something they shoehorned in there it wouldn't be given such prominence in the booklet (it's listed as if it's the second half of the entire package, not some kind of afterthought).

I just got back from a Deerhunter show and my ears are thoroughly destroyed. No question that my hearing will be worse after this. Wrong night to not bring earplugs.

With that aside, they are amazing. Their ability to reproduce their studios tracks into something familiar, but more intense and awashed in feedback is tremendous. Every song they played (and they played a very balanced set through their discography minus Turn It Up Faggot) was given Cox's supersonic treatment and came through as something more than its studio version. Musically, I am very, very impressed by their live show. They did a lot of seguing songs to each other and weren't afraid to play their ambient/noise cuts. They don't do much stage banter or even that much movement aside from head bobbing, but the light setup was very good. Their Cryptograms tracks were especially great, musically and visually. Their closer, "Saved by Old Times" a la Weird Era Cont probably made half the audience go deaf. Had it not been raining cats and dogs out here in Los Angeles, I would have probably gotten stoned and been treated to one the best stoner performances of the year, but I doubt I would have survived the drive back home. All in all, a great experience. Would definitely recommend seeing them. Would also definitely recommend bringing earplugs.

EDIT: My mistake, the ending song that wrecked my ears was "Twilight at Carbon Lake."

Thanks for the great concert review. As much as I loved Microcastle I am loving Weird Era Cont. just as much now. They seriously can't do wrong right now.

Yeah, they are pretty awesome live. I caught them last night and on top of that, they are some of the nicest guys I have ever met. It was a pleasure to have "BRADFORD WAS HERE" written on my arm.

And oh yeah, their album(s) is one of the best of the year, easily.

Some guy was going to get thrown out of the venue but Bradford said, "You're not throwing him out," and the security just talked to the dude and let him back in. He might have a god complex. He might be god when he's onstage. Mysteries of life.

Their album will definitely be in my top 5 this year.

Does anyone else see an animal collective influence in this record? Or are the two bands just part of the same scene if you know what I mean.

Coz after listening to the dodos, deerhunter and no age animal collective seems to be heavily permeating the indie rock/art rock sound.

Still don't know what to make of micro castle. Initial reactions are: there are the heavy songs and the soft songs, with some soft songs bulding and a few that go no where.

The variation seems to be buried beneath the surface so at first all the songs sound like my bloody valentine doing mogwai or something.

The head of state has called for me, but I don't have time for him

I don't hear any animal collective influence tbh. For me Microcastle is already a classic, listened to it 30+ times since it leaked and still not bored by it so that means it stood the test of time Smiler

No

Been listening to Cryptograms a lot lately, and fuck me, it's really good. I have no idea why I used to not like Spring Hall Convert and Heatherwood. I still think Microcastle is the better record, but it's much closer than I used to think. Does anyone think the bassist is the co-MVP of the band (along with Cox)? Killer basslines everywhere. See Cryptograms the song, Lake Somerset, Nothing Ever Happened for ex.

I'm going to jump on board with those of you who've stated that Weird Era Cont. is actually the better album of the two. Microcastle is good, but the high points on Weird Era Cont. are so much better.

I don't know if I necessarily agree, but both are awesome, for sure.
