I"m a big fan of Weezer's Pinkerton and that, along with the Shins and Flaming Lips is what really got me into Indie Rock so i would consider it classic

i'm beginning to realize that there is a whole generation of people around college age, including me, that were greatly affected by Pinkerton, and pretty much all of them found "indie" rock eventually. he might have written 'beverly hills' later, but dang it rivers cuomo was pretty kingly in his day.

AIRIK. I can't figure out if you are being sarcastic or are just a douche. I prefer the latter.

Not in reference to my man Airik, I love how people just posted albums they liked in a thread about "classics." There is one post with all the white strips albums and BRMC's first one. Pardon?

No one has mentioned Talk Talk either. Both Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden are classics. I happen to agree but I'm not just saying they are classics, I think it is widely held that they are classics.

JOHNSOFATS. I can't figure out if you are being hypercritical or just a douche. I prefer the latter.

Not in reference to my man John, who also happens to be fat. I love how people post complaints on forums and try to take up room like im doing right now.

Noone has really mentioned the Stone Roses. Isn't their debut classic? Maybe you don't consider it indie. Also, Pinkerton, as classic as it is, is not considered indie in my book.

Actually, The Stone Roses' debut album was mentioned. On the first page of this thread.

Unwound - Repetition/New Plastic Ideas/Future of What
Catherine Wheel - Ferment
Plexi - Cheer Up (One of the most underrated, legendary bands of all time.)
Bailter Space - Robot World

Some others:
Radiohead - OK Computer (avoid the rest of their albums, which are VERY overrated)
The Posies - Frosting on the Beater (avoid other Posies albums)
Swervedriver - Mezcal Head/Raise
Juned - Every Night For You
Nudeswirl - S/t
Band of Susans - The Word and the Flesh

Some bands mentioned on this thread to COMPLETELY avoid: Guided By Voices, White Stripes, BRMC, Wilco, Blur, Death Cab for Cutie, Stereolab, Belle & Seb. Other than that, you have a pretty good list to work off of.

After you get into all of that stuff, look back at the list right above the sentence, and you'll see why I told you to avoid those bands.

Trust me.

I'd squeeze in Pinkerton as indie. That and the blue album are weezer's only indie releases, i'd say.

otherwise, netural milk hotel, apples in stereo, husker du, sonic youth, pavement are classic indie bands that made a lot of classic indie albums

But... i'm not sure what you're talking about. These might be classic alt/rock albums, but most aren't indie... REM, Beck, Wilco, Radiohead, and Elliot Smith aren't really indie. Some of them are still very good (I love beck and wilco) but not indie.

EXCUSE ME!?!? Italics because I said that aloud in quite a high voice and it was kinda silly.
But seriously, I don't like you.

It's not that they are horrible, just horribly overrated.

There is a ridiculous notion floating around that Radiohead is somehow the vanguard of all that is artsy and experimental and challenging in rock music (ha!). And that all other bands are just frantically scrambling to keep up with them.

I can name hundreds of albums that put every Radiohead album to shame, aside from OK Computer.

Young, impressionable indie rockers of today are weaned on the notion that Radiohead's supremecy is not only a moot point, but that to question it is unfathomable. A thorough anti-Radiohead screed detailing each of their pathetic shortcomings could take up 50 more pages, but you get the point.

And the album Amnesiac, O...M...F...G. I rolled around on the floor laughing hysterically while listening to this album. It's a must-own album for pure comedic value.

I'm 50, so yeah, I'm real impressionable. Go check this. Then after you respond there, come back and lay down the first five of the 50 screed pages; I'm dying to read ALL of them.

So I take it anyone that doesn't share your opinion about music makes you depressed? Try educating yourself a little bit about music and listen to some of those old bands that used to be to challenging and too "hard to get." Who knows, maybe you'll hear something or feel something you never did before.

I didn't like SY that much at first listen either.

I believe that he is trying to do that. He's just reacting, and he didn't call anybody an idiot when he did.

That said, I'm not sure why you said to avoid the last list. I like just about all the music you listed, and I think its all pretty similar in quality and spirit. Care to elaborate?

EDIT: with the exception of white stripes. not too into them.
