Many here would not agree with me but i feel that Franz Ferdinand style music is getting way to much credit. Franz, the killers, the rapture, theses bands are the most popular things right now, and i now listen to and buy older cds more. Id rather listen to Metallica and Nirvana over and over again than here this. Just wanted to know what people thought.

They're just over-hyped. All of them owe a carton of smokes to Television.

Hello, you may have been better off putting this in the actual Franz Ferdinand thread I can't really complain about indie, because I know close to nothing about the genre. In most cases, I would have to agree with you when you said "I'd rather listen to Metallica and Nirvana over and over again" but I am not a fan of the genre. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad, so I wouldn't go so far as to call it, to paraphrase you, overrated.

Personally, I am enjoying the Franz album quite a lot. I tend to not be into indie rock bands like The Strokes, but a good song is a good song and Franz have many on their debut album. Being that it is their debut I am not going to buy into any major hype over them and proclaim the next big thing. At the same time the potential is there in their songwriting ability. As far as Metallica goes, they have four albums I will listen to and only two that I consider classics, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets. They are an embarrassing joke these days who would sell out their entire legacy just to have a catchy hit on the charts like Franz Ferdinand. Nirvana has never done much for me, and Nevermind is the only album I find worth listening to of there's anymore. Andy Wallace's work on that album is what gave it a sound quality that is acceptable to me, the rest of the Nirvana catalogue is overall just too sloppy and amateurish for my tastes. With the exception of the Unplugged album. I have hopes that Franz Ferdinand and the Scissor Sisters will continue to write good songs and put out many more albums. They both make music that is enjoyable to listen to wherever you are, in the club, at home, in the car, it doesn't matter.

didnt mean to insult anyone over liking it... but there is no doubt even among fans of the genre that the songs are way overplayed.

Overplayed rarely means anything to me as I almost never listen to radio, and only occasionally watch Muchmusic/MTV. No insult taken.

I can't stand TV and Radio: the twin fangs of consumer indoctrination. I just hear Franz and remember how much better Television is.

Just sit there and listen to your metallica and nirvana...i dont think either of them have had a relevant album in many years.

But i am sure you are listening to them to remanisce a bit.In the same way that alot of people like the franz ferdinands and the killers and etc. because they take alot of the sound from the 80's punk sound?

I persoanlly dont care if an artist is played out...i also do not listen to the radio.Occasionally i will tune into kexp in seattle...to hear some new interesting stuff.

I love the throwback sound...the futureheads also could be thrown into that mix a bit.

I've already expressed my concern for current music, but I will say that "And Justice for All", "Master of Puppets", and "Bleach" beat most of the current rock out. To me all forms of radio equal pop culture. Even the rock stations have their own form of pop culture, and replay the same tripe over and over again. That is why some guy invented the CD player, so that my mind will not be invaded by top 40 hits and commercials while I am driving.

I absolutely cannot under any circumstances listen to and enjoy Metallica no matter how good their old stuff obviously is. Lars is a cancer and his idiotic moralization against MP3s has forever ruined anything Metallica related for my enjoyment. As soon as I hear the name, I get a bad taste in my mouth. There is so much good rock out there now that to try to lump Franz as a style is futile. How about The Shins? They aren't the most original but they're far from popular and that's just the way I like 'em.

I think there's far too much hype over this post-punk revival, and maybe too much credit being given to some of the artists, but I share the enjoyment of many in this new sub-genre. The Futureheads, Dogs Die in Hot Cars, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, etc are all heavily influenced by post-punk and new wave, genres that I enjoy.

Is it overhyped? Sure.

Was the Seattle scene overhyped in 1991? Damn straight.

Was the thrash metal underground overhyped in the early 80's? Yep.

I'm not a Metallica fan, and less of one for the reason Filmore brings up. And I personally think Nirvana may be close to the most overrated band of all time, not to start a new thread, but I understand why people are reacting against the "new wave of new wave." Hype kills. Just listen to the music.

And commercial radio ain't gonna get you a fair listen to new music.

But you can't just disregard all of the good albums before they sold out. You can shake your head about how good they once were. It is like even though Barry Bonds took steroids, you can't disregard how good he is. And I am off topic again...sorry.

As far as hype goes. Everything is hyped. During preseason football the Seahawks were all the hype, now...not so much. Before Killzone came out it was going to be a "Halo Killer", now...not so much. Hype isn't even worth listening to unless you give a fair examination of what they are talking about before buying into it. Hype generally has one purpose, to get you interested in a product, and hype generally deserves at least an attempt to like what is being hyped.

I thought it was pretty funny, too. I don't know much about onaplain101, the source of the quote, but my guess is that he/she might be a younger music fan (based on the Top Ten list) and might not be aware of the historical antecedents of "Franz Ferdinand style" music. I've always made no bones about liking the FF record, but admitting it's a pretty strong cop on some records I like from the late 70's and early 80's...

I know they are good. I just can't listen to them because the image of Lars' cigar chewing, sweaty pursed lips spewing all sorts of "it's about control" nonsense about MP3s is burned in my eyes. I can't, with good conscience, support a band that sold-out. They still get money for their back-catalogue. Maybe when they die. I can't listen to the Rolling Stones until Jagger bites it too.

I don't know though, man. I've never understood why people refuse to buy music by people who have done things that they disagree with, especially if they would enjoy it anyway. But then, I've never been in that situation, so I guess I can't talk.
