Coldplay gets a bad rap IMO. If they never had broken out to be huge in the mainstream, I think a lot more "indie cool" types would still like them. Though I'd agree that their lyrics can be a bit cheesy and generic. Chris needs to work on that.
I was ok with Coldplay until they had this one song that completely rips kraftwerk's computer love (Can't remember what the name of the song is though). They just directly transposed the synth line to guitar, took the exact same chord progression. If there's one band that really needs to get sued coldplay is that band.

I'm not exactly a Colplay supporter, but they do credit Kraftwerk in the songwriting credits for the song "Talk".

Aha! I was wondering how they got away with that...
And amen on the bloc party thing. They try to act so old school punk but really they're just a pop band. And they tried to get cred by bashing oasis, which is goddamn pointless. Like digging a hole to reach the candy jar.
man some of you people are douchebags. you're just attacking every band that more than like 12 people know and calling them overrated because we've heard of them.
overrated does not mean "crappy," or "sold out" it means the band is acclaimed for more than they are worth, which in most cases is only judged by personal preference. so, if half the world thinks a band is good, and decides that they have to be played day and night, then they sure as hell are not overrated. what a stupid word anyway, this whole thread is based on something that doesn't even have the same definition to people.
and modest mouse is sure as hell not overrated. sure, some of their songs aren't as great as they should be, but damn they can make music, listen to "talking shit about a pretty sunset" or "positive/negative"

yeah
Add to that the rest of "The Lonesome Crowded West," "Building Nothing out of Something," "The Moon and Antarctica" and yeah they are a goddamn incredible band.
OPB: m.leland: Eric, duh, the new "in" thing to do is to be "out" so you can actually be "in," so make sure you proudly and loudly set yourself apart — not by what you like — by what you dislike.

What did you expect? A big group hug? Some people don't like bands that a lot of other people like. So they call them overrated - or whatever better term you wanna come up with. Trash talking is fun!!!!
This is just my opinion but I think U2 has become overrated, I mean after Achtung Baby their career faded. But now they have been making albums that are quite bland and don't have the 80's and early 90's flavor.

yeah, probably. gazillion people arena shows are sad. But bono's sunglasses are the most underrated bit of eyewear EVER. I mean, if he didn't wear them he wouldn't be able to shoot food out of his eyes at all the starving african kids.

That's snappy. I like that. If anyone else feels the same as vitunkrapula does, check this out. Funny shit. Be sure to read the review of "Crumbs From Your Table".
ermmm - I dunno if I'd want to be THAT sarcastic. His glasses are really the most entertaining thing about U2 for me. seriously. But I don't wanna go into a rant about how much the band sucks, because honestly I have a hard time caring either way, cos when people start really laying into U2 they sound like what I would imagine rabid dogs would say if they could speak.
If Muse wasn't actually mentioned back there, they get their chance now. Granted, they have a few decent songs, and they are obviously skilled musicians, but really, they are nothing but a copy of Bends era Radiohead, and not a good one at that. Muse, does every keyboard line have to be a classical melody? Is there a need for flashy guitar solos in your music? No. That's not good songwriting, that's giving your ego pleasure. Look, you can play a mean Beethoven piano part, big deal, your music has nothing to do with Beethoven. Matt Bellamy, you can sure play your guitar fast, I mean move four fingers on your left hand fast. You know what? When I was fifteen, I practiced for hours a day, and I could play just as rapidly. They say guitar solos are for musicians to enjoy, but people that actually play guitar shouldn't care about that garbage, because they know just how easy it is to do. Mr. Bellamy, I see that you have recently jumped on the Bush-hating bandwagon. I'm not trying to start a political discussion here, and I certainly wish Kerry had beaten W as well, but isn't it rather safe to come out NOW and accuse the president of war crimes? I mean come on, his approval rating is as low as it gets, and his beloved republcan party hates him now too! To release a politically themed album as direct as Black Holes and Revalations now seems a little redundant guys. What's that? You aren't even from America? But you act like it's your business to do something about this! So... you are from another country, and are poking your nose into another country's business, and talking about how their leader must be removed... Americans, is this remotely familier? Didn't we just do the same thing?
Matt Bellamy, your name means nothing to most of society. Tons of people know about Thom Yorke and Bono, and because of this, their opinions are noted. Just because you think so highly of yourself, do you think the world does as well? I hope not.
(not to mention about 80% of Muse's songs sound exceedingly similar in structure, tone, and melody. In this aspect, yes, they are VERY similar to Coldplay)
Danielson is an aquired taste for sure, and I wouldn't expect most people to like it. I enjoyed their new one and I think their live show is fun, but their music is really easy not to like as well
I haven't listened to Muse's new album, and I have no plans to do so. From what I've heard, they sound like the bastard child of U2 and Buzz Lightyear.
