Up until today, I didn't think it was for anybody.
Ha ha! Good one! I'm pretty sure MMM is for those who feel a need to prove how superior they are because they 'get' difficult music. The best part is that they don't get that the joke's on them. And, for the record, I listened to the WHOLE thing, on vinyl, front to back. And I'll bet that, if the same noises that eminate from that album were coming loudly from outside of their house or apartment, they'd be pissed and might even complain to the source of the noise. But when the opportunity comes along to be cool by claiming they like it, they climb on board that train.

I've listened to some of MMM, though admittedly, I wasn't able to sit through the whole thing. I can't fathom why anyone would choose to listen to this, when Lou's recorded some genuine masterpieces like Transformer, Street Hassle, or Songs for Drella. But I don't feel bad about that. As Lou himself once said in an interview regarding the album, "Anyone who gets to side four is dumber than I am."

I love the description, slipdream. Are you attempting to make it sound good?

I think he was trying to paraphrase allmusic's (one star) review of it. quote: Reed released this 64-minute aural assault that offered up a densely layered soundscape constructed from feedback, distortion, and atonal guitar runs sped up or slowed down until they were all but unrecognizable.

MMM is very "difficult" for most people. I, like most people, hated it until I really got into atonality and guitar textures.
It's still not something I listen to regularly, and I agree it's not exactly an "enjoyable" record. Musically, it's a masterpiece though.

It's not an enjoyable record, but it's a masterpiece? What is the point of making music that nobody likes? Or listening to music you don't enjoy? Why do you listen to music?

It's not something I'd casually listen to while sitting around sipping tea. It is very long and dragged out, and not the kind of thing I (or most people) would "enjoy."
However, there are many artists that have music that I appreciate because the music was a masterpiece for it's time. For example, I don't really enjoy Beethoven, but I know about his accomplishments.
So, Beethoven isn't going to be something I listen to all that often, since I do listen to music to enjoy it just like everyone else here. On the other hand, I disagree with some people here that it has to be all or nothing.

OK, I'll try my hand at your new system of classification. Coldplay's "Parachutes" was a masterpiece of bland, boring, soundscape-y pop that revolutionized how crappy bands get rich. Although I don't like listening to it, I can respect how crappy it is.

For one, Parachutes is not bland and boring.
And I never said anything about MMM being bland or boring or crappy.
MMM is almost the same thing for a long period of time. Listening to it front to end would probably only be done by guitar enthusiasts to observe the interesting feedback patterns, buried melodies, etc.

I can understand that one doesn't necessarily need to love something to appreciate it, but I'd at least make sure I like something before throwing out words like "masterpiece". It's not hard to make something that's simply different, which is all MMM is. The chore is doing something unique and having people be able to enjoy it, like the Beatles, Sonic Youth, or numerous other Lou Reed albums. IMHO, MMM is nothing more than a failed art experiment.

I'll second that. Coldplay gets a bad rap IMO. If they never had broken out to be huge in the mainstream, I think a lot more "indie cool" types would still like them. Though I'd agree that their lyrics can be a bit cheesy and generic. Chris needs to work on that.

I should note that my distate for Coldplay is a result of my own nuances. I value lyrics far more than anything else; for me, only a musically perfect album can overcome bad lyrics. And Coldplay is nowhere near musically perfect.

That was a demand. He thinks we should muse more about this topic, ie, we should become absorbed in thought or ponder it further.
