I agree there are some fantastic first albums.
I personally love a lot of them. Examples being: Is This It?, Source Tags and Codes, etc.
And not to say those bands haven't lived up to their hype, thats debatable. But Overrated to me includes the "this is the band that will remold how you think about rock"
How many times have we heard the 2nd coming of the british dominance of rock is coming. Heard that with Oasis, heard that with Franz etc.
How many bands in the past few years have been declared the great new thing only to have a sophomore slump or to have a catalog of stuff that never lives up to the first disc?
As Steve Earle once said "you have your whole life to make your first CD and a year to make your second"

A lot. I'd say a band that makes a terrific first or second album only to fizzle out is the norm in rock. Of course there are exceptions (Beatles, Stones, U2, Radiohead, etc.), but they're few and far between. But, I don't think a band that peaks early is necessarily overrated.

I'm pretty sure ...Trail of Dead had at least one album before Source Tags and Codes.

Hi, I'm new here. Most of these bands I'd classify as Indie Pop, but I don't think there's a forum for that genre. Apologies if I should've posted this elsewhere. The Decemberists Everyone I know kept telling me how amazing Picaresque was, so I downloaded Sixteen Military Wives, and liked it. I went out and bought the album, and quickly realized that was the only song I could stand. Last summer I saw them live and it was one of the worst shows I've ever been forced to endure. The Fiery Furnaces They came to town the same week as The Decemberists last summer. The songs they performed from Blueberry Boat were alright, but everything since that album has been total crap. Of Montreal I've never liked any of their albums, yet I feel guilty admitting it. Oh well. I saw them perform at a film festival, and it was one of the most dull, uninspiring things I've ever witnessed. The rest of the list: Belle and Sebastian Wolf Parade Okkervil River Broken Social Scene
riiiight.

Correct, Trail of Dead had not one but TWO records prior to Source Tags & Codes. The first was a self-titled underproduced full length and the second was the excellent Madonna. I liked Trail of Dead quite a bit prior to their decision to make a bloated teen angst trash record like Worlds Apart. That record and the title track in particular sound almost as bad as when Smashing Pumpkins went from the grandeur of Siamese Dream to the yelping teen anthem garbage of trash like "Zero." On another note, as much as I like the Trail of Dead stuff up through Source Tags & Codes, it sounds exactly like Sonic Youth filtered through the early works of Unwound. There was a great fucking band, Unwound. Listen to Fake Train and then try to tell me that Trail of Dead didn't tear a page out of that playbook.

I agree with most of this, though I absolutely love Okkervil and I thought the Fiery Furnaces' EP was excellent. You're right on about their other post- Blueberry stuff. Hopefully Matt Friedberger's double solo album coming out this summer will be a return to form.

Show me one topic that isn't. That is most definitely the point to all of this.

It pretty much seems to me that almost any band that recieves a lot of hype is going to be considered to be overrated by some people. I really don't think that people need to be getting so worked up about it; if you like something, then why does it matter whether or not other people do?

wow, guero, i'm suprised you put modest mouse in there. i mean, with some of the bands, i would agree with you, because they lack so much originality (arctic monkeys, strokes, clap your hands say yeah--i think CYHSY are pretty good, but definitely not original...i think CYHSY are a big flavor-of-the-month band), but i am suprised with the modest mouse. I couldn't disagree more with that.
what makes a band like modest mouse overrated? is it just personal preference?
i think you'd be hard-pressed to deny their influence and their unique sound. i mean, they definitely have their own influences (waits, talking heads, pixies, etc), but i would say that the influences that they've combined have created a truly amazing and original sound (obviously, i'm referring particularly to the albums The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon & Antarctica.
then again, i'm biased. i love modest mouse. there, i said it.

Wow dude I can understand most of those even though I personally love Wolf Parade and Broken Social Scene and like Decemberists and Fiery Furnaces quite a bit and have no opinion on the rest you mentioned but Belle and Sebastian?! I mean I'm obviously a biased opinion (as are we all) because theyre one of my favorite bands but I mean what is there not to like? I mean they're clever, melodic, witty, touching, so many great things. What in particular makes you call them overrated?

The Arcade Fire, actually, really are that good.

Yeah, I'm with Sicnarf. I just don't know how you can listen to an album like Arcade Fire's Funeral and call them overrated.
Same goes for two Modest Mouse albums I mentioned above.
It might not be your personal preference (in terms of what you like to listen to), but overrated? No way.

In response to brighteyes, Belle and Sebastian annoys me endlessly. Why? I'm not quite sure, but I'll try to explain. It's not the "touching" aspect...I've been a Death Cab fan since way back when, so I'm obviously not opposed to grandiose displays of emotion. I think it's that everyone perceives them as witty and clever...the music comes off as too self-aware to be either of those things. Most of my negative feelings stem from the quality of their live shows (lack thereof). That's a major part of what turns me on/off to a particular group. Anybody can record an album and with the right help can make it sound amazing...it's a lot harder to fake it live. As for the Fiery Furnaces, the quality of their albums is way too inconsistent to hold my attention. Lyrics are another factor...I've never liked Belle and Sebastian's or Of Montreal's lyrics. For future reference, I'm a chick...I've been called a guy a few times now.
riiiight.
