..which wouldn't have even been that big of a hit if not for the awesomeness of that rotoscoped video. You win the "best post of the day" award.

Yeah, but I can't think of anybody who likes A-ha. As to V's question - I listened to track one of FWN. I've heard all of their debut several times over, which was called the second best British album ever (or something equally insane) by NME. Prof - I (pretty obviously) don't have quite the same process for things like this that most people do. You take something utterly average, like the Arctic Monkeys (I'm telling you...it causes me pain just to say that name, that's how stupid it is) and THEN you add people spouting off about how great they are. That's when I get hateful. I mean, you didn't see me posting a page-long thing about the Gin Blossoms. No point. I don't see the argument with the "you take so much time on this lol" people. It takes me like a minute and a half to write most of my posts. Six minutes max.

Mediocrity generally doesn't garner such disdain. A simple "Meh" would have sufficed. ---------------------------------- Employee of the month awards are the opiate of the masses. For the potheadsGang Starr

Same thing happened to me with The Notwist. I never understood the hype behind Neon Golden but I love The Devil, You + Me. quote: Originally posted by BlackGravel: As to V's question - I listened to track one of FWN. The real question is why do you listen to NME hype? I've already tried to explain to you that their debut was absolutely mindless dance-rock garbage but that they redeemed their name when they released Favourite Worst Nightmare. There are very few bands in the game today who can match their constant onslaught of hooks (on the guitar, drums, and lyrically).

There aren't really drum hooks. There are vocal hooks and other instrumental "hooks," but "hook" is a mostly meaningless word. It can be just a "repeated passage" but it usually refers to something "catchy" (another useless word - does catchy mean IMMEDIATE? does it mean PERSISTENT?). People also use it interchangeably when they mean "riff" or "theme." Considering the riffs that the Arctic Monkeys play push me away from the music rather than causing it to stick in my mind, they'd hardly be called "hooks" with regard to someone like me. In the most useful and relevant sense, a hook has to be GOOD in order to BE a hook. And that fucking shit in Brianstorm most certainly is not (wretch, gag etc.) There are like two interesting "hooks" on their entire debut. I might decide to look through the rest of FWN for more.

I can’t stand the Arctic Monkeys. Although, that’s not to say their music is bad, it just really isn’t for me.

I can't fucking stand the Wrens. They suck.
(In all seriousness though, I really don't like them. Although, Charles Bissell really added a lot to Okkervil River when I saw him playing with them a few months back.)

Sigh... If I thought that they sucked, that’s exactly what I would have said. From what I’ve heard they’re good at what they do, and I can understand why people like them, but their general sound really isn’t for me, I just can’t enjoy it.

I'm terrified of people like grabblegarr. They have me so figured out, one deadly little sentence can pierce my very heart. You have gotten my goat, person-attempting-to-get-my-goat-number-nine-hundred-and-fifty-three. You are THE WINNER!

Oh thank god. I was hoping I would be the one to put you over the edge, but I certainly didn't expect it.
Also, why the FUCK can't anyone spell my name? 3 R's. I mean my god.

For the record, spelling made-up names isn't spelling. I can't believe no one's mentioned The Doors.

In my case, yes it is.
I thought there was conversation about the Doors around here but apparently not.
The thing is that, especially in ultra-hip places such as Metacritic, the Doors aren't rated especially high. I think you'll find in most cases that the Doors get a lot of criticism from a lot of people (excluding half the 14 year old boys in the country). In fact, I'd go as far as to say they get a bit too much criticism. Sure, Jim Morrison certainly wasn't a prophet, and musically they were mostly mediocre, but they have some pretty solid stuff.
But to all the people (you'll find none here) who think the Doors are somehow in the pantheon of classic rock, yes the Doors are overrated.

For me, I just do not get the acclaim for Sufjan. I see how people could like him, but proclaim that his sprawling, pretentious albums are as great as they are? Balls, man.

WHOA! Thanks for correcting me brah. You contradict yourself so much.. if it's a meaningless word then you can't really correct my usage. Listen to any good drummer who is more than just the backbone of the group (great example is Brann Dailor of Mastodon) and you find yourself repeating a fill in your head over and over... how is that any different from a melodic or vocal hook? I seriously don't know whether to call you the worst troll or the best troll ever...

No Age I listened to the entirety of Weirdo Rippers. I thought it was okay, but generally overly noisy and unfocussed. Now I've listened to the better part of Nouns and I'm running into the same problem. If you strip away the distortion, they are a very basic, adequately skilled duo. The White Stripes kill them for virtuosity, and they don't need to fill their tracks out with feedback loops to make them sound complete. And yet, all the press I can find says they are the most amazing band ever. I don't get it. The way I see it, My Bloody Valentine did this a whole lot better and earlier. Kevin Shields is a living legend, while at best, Nouns is a 3/5. Anyone with me? ________________________________________________________ "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.
